Has anyone ever come across a genuine 12 gauge shot pistol?
Or had one made?

I experienced a home made one about 17 years ago, when I watched a friends Dad pull the trigger, both barrels ripped off the stock and flew over his shoulder:eek:

For some strange reason, he wouldn't do it again:D

A shotgun of pistol size is not legal in the USA, so reliable reports are not common. Ithaca made the Auto-Burglar Guns in 20 bore until they were banned in 1934.
I have seen 12 bore guns sawn off to pistol length for unscheduled bank withdrawals, but they normally serve more by intimidation than shooting.

I suppose they are quite handy for the odd unscheduled bank withdrawal.
After seeing .410 amd 9mm shot pistols over here in the UK, I was just wondering if it had ever been done on a grander scale eg. 12g?

In Cancun several years ago a couple of the security guards had pistols that appeared to be single shot, with huge barrels and 12 guage shells in their belt loops. They flirted constantly with the female tourists but when I tried to talk to them they forgot how to speak english immediately. Not good lookin enough I guess.

I recall a magazine write-up several years ago, complete with pics, of a handmade 12 gauge single-shot pistol. A U.S. serviceman in the Philippines saw it in a dealer's shop, and got to examine and fire it!

It was about the same size as an old AMT Back-Up .380 ACP, had a double-action trigger, and (per the writer) a truly fearsome recoil. . .

Go figure! :what:

I recall a story from my youth about a guy, I think his name was Juan or something, who took an old 12ga single shot and pruined the barrel back to about 4 inches, then cut the stock off into a makeshift pistol grip. Juan and a few of his hunting buddies took the "pistol" down to the pond and tried it out. One of them ended up with 3 stitches just over his right eye when the stock slipped off of the frame when the gun was fired. If a fella had enough patience he could probably find that shotgun at the bottom of a pond somewhere.

I saw one once when I was a kid. Fellow we were hunting with had it. It was a 12 ga double, cut off just ahead of the forearm, and flush with the pistol grip. He was showing it to the other men, (I wasn't a real person you see, just a dumb kid.) but I saw it as it was passed around, and heard the wispers, "You better not get caught with that thing," and "I'll bet it kicks like a mule."

I have no idea if he ever shot it, or where he got it.

"A shotgun of pistol size is not legal in the USA"

This is absolutely untrue.

The ownership of short barreled shotguns, as well as shotguns that are classified as "Any Other Weapons" are regulated by the National Firearms Act of 1934. Because they are regulated by law DOES NOT make them illegal. These firearms were NEVER banned by the federal government. There are locations in the US where they have been banned by LOCAL and STATE governmental bodies, but they are perfectly legal at the federal level and many people in the US own these weapons.

I do not own a "12 guage pistol". Although I do own a short barreled shotgun (shotgun with a 14" barrel with a buttstock). I am definitely going to buy what I would consider a "12 guage pistol" in the near future. Henry at TitleII Firearms has one for sale that I have been dicusssing with him: http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=7&f=118&t=326754
Your local and state laws might make this difficult or impossible for you depending on where you live. Ownership of that weapon, by me, is very simple and painless here in Las Vegas Nevada.

I had a legal shotgun pistol in 12 guage. It was a single shot like a H&R shotgun
It complied with minimum barrel length and minimum overall length.
It was not difficult to shoot nor was recoil very bad.

I used it on the ranch on a snowmobile for predator control, and shot it one handed while on the moving at considerable speed.

The first gun I ever shot was one such as you describe. I ended up on my back with a bleeding forehead after trying to 'John Wayne' the bad boy.
