View Full Version : What is your largest, heaviest carry gun?

For the last week or so, when I'm out and about, I've switched my carry gun from a S&W 642 Airweight to a S&W 4506. For those of you that are not familiar with it, the 4506 is a full-sized, DA/SA, all-stainless, .45 cal auto. This gun weighs in at a shade under 3 lbs fully loaded.

Since it's winter here, I wear a full length coat and found that with the right belt (2" wide Tommy Hilfiger, $5 at TJ Maxx) and holster (Gould and Goodrich pancake high-ride w/thumbreak - $15 from eBay) I can carry this all day long at 8:00 (I'm a lefty) and barely notice it.

I'm thinking of making this my full time winter carry gun. I figure as long as I can stand the weight, and can wear clothing to hide it, why not carry as much gun as I can?

Like my combat handgun instructor said, "Rule No. 1 is, Have a gun. Rule No. 2 is, Have a gun with a caliber that starts with a 4."

Anybody else out there consistently carry an anvil like this?

I used to think that way, but my Ruger P90 and P85 are a bit too heavy to justify when I shoot my Kel Tec P11 so well. I feel very adequately armed with the P11 and it's 14oz unloaded weight and the Rosen leather I carry it in are so comfy, I've just decided to heck with it, and stick with it or my J frame size Taurus M85 Ultralite, 15 ounces unloaded. I don't see a need for carrying a small artillery piece when these too weapons, especially the P11, are so accurate and easy to shoot. 9mm +P is definitely plenty of round to suit me, too.

Well, I only own two guns. My G23 is the largest, and my SP-101 is the heaviest. Both meet the "start with .4" rule (.357 magnum gets rounded up), and both are small and light enough to comfortably carry around all day, in any clothing suitable for being seen in public with.

Heavy is good, since it helps control recoil, but I don't know if a gun of that size and weight is really any advantage in .45. A Colt 1991A1 commander I got to fire once was plenty controllable, and only a hair bigger than either of my guns.

Probably, my largest (and heaviest) carry gun would be my brand NIB
Les Baer Thunder Ranch Special .45 ACP~?:D :uhoh:

While not an everyday carry, I do occasionally carry my Desert Eagle in 50AE. I only do it when I am wearing a heavy coat and don't plan on doing a lot of walking. But, here in Montana there are more days when you need a coat, than not.

If not the DE, I carry a Para P14.

I carried a S&W 645 for almost 2 yrs when I was commanding a couple of drug task forces. It was usually my off duty carry too, winter and summer, since I was getting called out all hours of the day and night and never knew where I'd be when the call came. I still carry it sometimes off duty and find I can conceal it easier than my Glock 22 because the butt is thinner. Just takes a bit of getting use to.

Nice selection of carry guns. I have both of those at my disposal as well. I prefer the 642 (it's a size thing) but as far as the 4506 goes it has a great trigger and I like it way better than my full size Kimber.

Some years ago I carried my 6.5" S&W 629. Not the easiest gun to conceal, but I sure could shoot that puppy. (Okay, my regular carry gun was my SIG P226, but I did tote the big .44 occasionally.) These days it's 1911's all the way and every day. At the present moment I am carrying a high-polish Springfield SS Loaded with Ed Brown innards and gorgeous Eagle American Moose grip panels. I just finished putting it together and running a thousand rds. through her last week and she is a beauty. Before that it was a full-size Kimber and before that a SIG P220. BTW, the Alessi Talon Plus makes it a breeze to carry a full-size 1911.

I regularly carry a pre-agreement Smith & Wesson model 629 .44 magnum revolver with a three-inch barrel. Since it rides in a paddle holster and hangs over my belt, it's actually more comfortable to carry than my pre-agreement model 60 in an inside the waist band holster.

I occasionally carry a P226 X-Five 9mm with the mag well removed, loaded with 127 gr. +P+ Rangers in a 17 round Mec-Gar magazine. Once I use up all my Rangers I'll probably go with 124 gr. +P DoubleTaps to get .357 SIG performance. The heavy X-Five will easily soak up the recoil.

Unless conditions constrain me - nothing smaller.

Most "now-a-days" due to what I do and where I go I use my 'niche' gun...

I used to CCW two full size bone stock Gov't 1911s, or two Commander sized, or two K frames, or combo of any of the above...plus a BUG or two...or...

I always carry 2, full-size pistols. I switch between a G17 w/17-round & 19-round Mags.; and a SA XD-45 ACP w/ 13-round Mags. Other days I carry 1 of those, and 1 of my many 1911s. However, as stated, I always carry at least 2, full-size. In effect, I always have 1 high-cap, and 1 .45.

Last week I also purchased a Kel Tec .380 (OD w/ Hard chrome) loaded w/ 7 rounds of Win. Ranger 90Gn HPs, and a NAA Mini-revolver in .22 Mag, loaded with 3 rounds shot and 2 rounds "MaxiMag Gold Dot HPs". I carry the latter in my pants legs, and the aforementioned on the waistline.

In summer carry, I carry the 1911 up front via an IWB, and I'll have the smaller one somewhere.

I'm giving serious thought to a G30 or G36. Perhaps a Kimber or Colt 3" .45 ACP. I had an Ultra Eclipse, but was WAY too unreliable--back to the factory twice and still was wrong! If a pistol will not go 100 rounds w/ ZERO failures, I will not carry it.

I don't want to hurry too much, because I really suspect that SA will come out with the XD-45 ACP "Compact" soon. They aren't going to sit by and watch Glock hold that world with the G30.

I've always carried full sized handguns for CCW.

Browning HP/Glock19/Beretta 92/1911 Government will all conceal well IF you do your part.

My current choice is a Beretta 92 on the hip with a sometimes addition of a Glock 19 on my ankle. Impossible you say? Not in the least.

Just do your part.

Glock 19 is the largest. I own a G17 as well, but since it has a 3.5# trigger, I won't carry it.
As far as heaviest..well, i carry a Kahr MK9 too... That's probably close to the same weight as the G19.

I have carried a 1911 Colt, but they're too heavy and too many sharp edges (hard on the covering garment). Shame, .45ACP is a great caliber...but I do like 9mm +P as much (in the Glock and Kahr).

"Occasionally a Ruger Single-Action Birdshead Vaquero in a Mernickle holster. Proper clothing required.

Very cool ... On my list of guns I'd like to own.

I used to occasionally carry one or another Ruger Blackhawk 4 5/8" chambered in either .44 Magnum or .45 Colt ... until they changed the policy to exclude SA revolvers as off-duty weapons. It was never argued that I couldn't qualify Master with mine, only that reloading it was far too slow for it to be considered appropriate for modern L/E defensive usage ...

The largest handguns I ever carried for off-duty, though, were a 629 6 1/2" and a Ruger Redhawk 5 1/2" .44 Magnum. I still take one or another of them through the qualifications courses upon occasion, but I haven't actually carried either of them for quite a while.

Nowadays it's mostly either a 3-5" barreled pistol, chambered in 9mm, .40 S&W or .45 ACP, or a short-barreled revolver chambered in .38 Spl or .357 Magnum. Even my Ruger Service-Six 4" Heavy Barrel, MagNaPorted & Duty Tuned, hasn't been carried in several years ...

I anticipate that the largest off-duty weapons I'll be carrying any time in the future will most likely be either my personally owned lightweight SW1911SC 5" or my issued 4566TSW ...

When it's hot out or the social occasion dictates my clothing attire, my 642 comes along. When wearing a coat or in an especially unfriendly neighborhood, I tote an S&W 945 (5", "Government" size). All other times and times in between, I'm never without my trusty S&W 6906.

I usually carry a S&W Model 10, but I have absolutely no problems carrying my 5" Model 27 N-frame...in fact, with it being jacket weather around here right now, I've been carrying that big sixgun a lot lately.

I have a thick Ted Blocker gun belt, and a sturdy Bianchi Cyclone holster, and I seriously can't tell much difference in weight and comfort between the K-frame and the N-frame. The K is a little more convenient solely by virtue of having a shorter snout that doesn't bump into things quite as much. I carry both revolvers pretty far forward on the hip (at 2:30-ish), and there's no big difference in concealability.

I haven't weighed it recently, but I'm pretty sure that Model 27 weighs over 40 ounces loaded.

My heaviest and largest gun regularly carried is my CZ97B. It's not bad with a coat or other cover garment and a good holster. I haven't really carried my Beretta 96FS, but it is similiar in size and weight. And I've toyed with the idea of getting a holster for my Redhawk.

I normally carry a SP101, which isn't exactly dainty...
