Glock. I like the grip angle better, the tennifer finish is great, and the trigger isn't that bad with about $25 worth of aftermarket parts. The XDs grip angle seems more suited for shooting downhill.

Funny how people strongly preferred the Luger type grip angle, until people started coming out with all these weird stances with weird names. If pistols were meant to be fired with both hands, they'd be called handsguns instead of handguns!

Glocks build a great product, but XD's work just as well and for a bit cheaper.
I personally like the look of XD's over Glocks, but that's like saying "sure the Model T is great but does it have to be black?"

I wouldn't want to sell my G17, XD-45ACP or 1911s. Each has it strength and each has its weakness, or UNIqueness. I did sell my XD-9s and wish like heck I had NOT. Big mistake! I have though of next getting either a Glock or XD with ported barrel.

I voted for the XD~!:uhoh:

For these reasons: Steel sights, guide rod, and trigger. Stainless steel
magazines (instead of polymer), loaded chamber and cocking indicator,
ambi magazine release, 1911 grip angle and grip safety.

OTOH, I have owned a few Glock's in the past. Good guns, they just
are not for me~!

GLOCK edges out the XD on several fronts. GLOCKs have a lower bore axis for better recoil control, a superior finish (the envy of the firearms world), a better grip angle, greater simplicity, and more selection. GLOCK is also much better respected in LE and with civilian firearms trainers.

I really have owned about 7 or 8 Glocks (G22, G23, G30, G26, G19, G17 another G19 and another G17).

I have owned XDSC9, XDSC40, XD9, XD40. The XDSC9 and XD9 were both really nice, but the XD9 would get real hot during rapid fire drills right around the trigger. Metal does a nice heat transfer to the trigger. My XDSC9 was way off to the right and I had to get the sights adjusted after shooting for a while.

Of all my Glocks, only the G22 (1st or 2nd Gen) had a problem, and that was with the hard S&B primers getting light hits. Other than that, every Glock I have owned worked perfectly right out of the box. The sights were always dead on and I've spent my fair share of time bashing plastic sights (which I still don't like) but have to be honest here, I've never broken a set.

Secondly, Glocks customer service is top notch. I've sent two pistols back to Springfield, neither of them was fixed and I was forced to sell both at a tremendous loss.

Springfield advertises "Duty Ready" but Glock really is. Of the two, no matter how much I want to like Springfield, Glock just spanks them. The Glocks are better finished, more durable, more accurate, higher quality control, better service department, more proven and more after market accessories for them. You can't loose with a Glock. With the Springfield, I'm batting .500, which ain't good enough when I can get it right the first time for just $100.00 more. Get the Glock.

i have an xd, and am buying a glock. funny because i am no fan of plastic guns, but after wringing the xd out, i found that i could dump a magazine, on target, faster, and more accurately than i could w/ the love-of-my-life-sig 229.

so, i thought maybe there was something to these plastic guns... we'll see.

still, i will never concede that any plastic gun is better than a steel gun, and i really have no plans to buy any more plastic guns after i pick up the glock this weekend.

The problem with a thread like this is you could make it Glock vs. Lorcin and some of the self-proclaimed rugged individualists would vote against Glock just because of the strong American tradition of rooting against the popular choice and for the "underdog".

XD's may be fine weapons, but pink fluffly carnations vs. Glock would still pull a fair ratio towards PFC's on THR. There is no more irrationally loathed pistol manufacturer on earth then Glock.

Don't worry glock will catch up sooner or later!!!!

I voted for XD because thats what fits me

it sets up in my hand with a grip angle almost the same as my 1911

an I shoot them better

you will notice I said "I" shoot them better and that all that matters to me!!!

Both have their pro's and cons:

XD: Thin finish, better trigger (imo), better grip angle, better sight picture, uglier looking pistol.

Glock: Very strong finish, looks better than the XD, mushy trigger, plastic sights, awkward grip angle

In the end, I'd spend my $500 elsewhere. :)

Hell .40-.45 trust me I have nothing against XDs. From all I've heard they are fine reliable and accurate weapons. My experience with them extends to I think 5 rounds so I'm not qualified to judge, other than that I prefer the feel of Glocks.

I didn't bring up the idea of Lorcin vs. Glock to whine - I really meant it. If someone put up that poll I guarantee you you'd get at least about 15-20% who wouldn't vote for the Glock. There are plenty of people on THR who wouldn't vote for Glock if they were compared to Hilary Clinton's sweaty brassière..

XD all the way. The grip angle on a Glock is all wrong for me (kinda like shooting uphill), the trigger bites my finger when shooting, and I just don't care for how it fits my hand. My XD45 on the other hand, is more ergonomic, the trigger is better than any Glock I ever had, and the new finish is as good as, if not better, than the last couple of Glocks I've had.

Ankeny
February 15, 2006, 11:16 AM
I prefer the Glock, but I do a grip reduction to make them point like an XD. If I had to choose one or the other box stock it would be the XD for the ergonomics. The Glock points unnaturally high for a lot of shooters. Likewise, the XD points low for some folks. Pick one and practice.

I bought a NIB XD-9 today. It came with 3 stainless steel 15-round mags and the XD paddle holster. I shot about 90 rounds out of it today and I am very impressed with its accuracy. Yes I know the shots could be better, but the first several shots were off the black and then I slowed down. The target was about 30 feet away. I like my new XD-9.:D :D

I have both. While I really like the XD very much, I will lean slightly to the Glock.

XD is a great value, but it sure is top heavy with all those metal items that are plastic in the Glock.

A few perks about XD:
Grip Safety, Fully Supported Chamber, Rear facing chamber cocked indicator.

A few perks about Glock:
There everywhere, great aftermarket support/parts support, proven reliability in very extreme tests and high round counts that only "experience" can get you.

Can someone enlighten me, please? What sort of safety is the XD's grip safety supposed to provide? Yeah, I know that the gun won't fire unless the grip safety is depressed. But don't most (if not all) ADs and NDs occur with the gun firmly gripped in the hand? You can't pull the trigger without gripping the XD firmly enough to engage the "grip safety", can you? If you're holstering an XD won't your hand naturally be depressing the grip safety, rendering it useless in preventing an AD or ND? Isn't the grip safety tantamount to: "This gun won't fire unless the trigger is pulled"? The grip safety seems to me to have been incorporated into the XD design to appease the 1911 users.

Am I wrong? Perhaps I am a moron but I have been thinking about this for a while and cannot see how this provides any real safety against AD's and ND's.

XD...no doubt about it.

I have an XD-40 and it has not given me a lick of trouble.

Used to own a Glock 17, but since I also shoot 1911s and Hi-Powers the grip angle does not agree with me at all. Sold it for an XD-40 and never looked back.

The Glock is fine, if you do not shoot 1911s, HI-Powers, CZs or other autos with normal grip angles. Otherwise, the transition will drive you nuts. I also never cared for the plastic sights and spongy trigger of the Glock.

Those that say "buy a Glock or buy nothing" are obviously not aware of or have any expereince with the XD. The Xd is just as reliable as a Glock and a better shooter. Like the Colt 1911 guys, they're blind to one brand and cannot believe that theres anyhting out there that is as good or better than their chosen brand....but its true!

Just as Springfield and Kimber make 1911s that will beat Colts, the Xd is as good or better than the much bally-hooed Glocks.

This is sort of like asking who's sexier: Hilary Swank or Jessica Simpson?

Even though they are both great, I voted Glock, if for no other reason than that the 26-27 twins are slightly more compact than the XD-9 Subcompact. For a full-sized gun I'd probably be happy with either, though my Glocks are my favorite guns.

I have held several Glock's in the past month. I really don't remember what models they were because I have been looking at so many. The only thing I did not like about the Glock was the grip angle and the way it felt in my hand. I may seem strange for buying 2 Sig's with DA/SA and then going to an XD-9, but I am strange. I HATE the XD trigger.

sturmruger
February 16, 2006, 03:47 PM
This is something I posted last year.

My two favorite features of the SA XD are the excellent trigger, and the grip safety. The reason I am such big fan of the grip safety is because the other night it saved me from having a ND. It was late and I had just finished cleaning my XD. I use my XD as my home defense gun. I like to use my XD because I just bought a M6 light and laser unit that mounts on the front. I had loaded mag and inserted into the gun, I chambered a round, and then topped off the mag. As I was leaving my gun room in the basement I remembered that I had left some stuff in the pathway to the stairs. Since all the lights were out I decided to use the M6 to illuminate my path. For some reason the M6 was set to off so I was having trouble getting it to work. In my tired state my mind decided that to get the light to come on I should pull the trigger!!! I know that sounds crazy, but thats what I did.

The good news is I was not holding on to the frame properly so the grip safety was not engaged.(thank God) The trigger was pulled all the way to the rear and stopped. At that point it started to register in my mind what had happened. I put the gun down and sat down in a chair. I probably sat there in the dark for 10 minutes analyzing what I had just done. It scared me to think that I had almost shot my gun in the basement while my wife was upstairs sleeping. I am now so thankful for the grip safety. The gun was pointed in a safe direction and would not have shot anything except the wall and maybe my computer desk.

I know the best safety is the one between our ears, but the grip safety on the XD saved my butt. This experience has made me slow down and think things through more thoroughly before acting. I hope my story helps someone. Oh by the way the XD shoots like a dream, and I have had great luck shooting it in our IPSC event.

Someone also asked what the safety does. If I remember correctly the grip safety blocks the small piece of metal that is holding the firing pin to the rear. I will have to look around and see if I can see what that part is called.

There is a lot of opinion in your post and little fact. The XD is not a better shooter than the Glock for me. The trigger reset is long making controlled pairs and hammers slower. As for Kimber and Springfiled beating Colt. Thats not true either. Their all in the same ball park. The best Colts are everybit as good as the best Springfilelds or Kimbers. In fact Colts lately have had a better reputation than the new Kimbers. The XD is a fine pistol but not for me. IF they fixed the trigger it would be worth considering. Also the grip angle is not that big od a deal. I shoot both Glocks and 1911's without problem. The only thing that happens is you place your shots a bit higher with Glocks after shooting 1911's. Only about 3 inches at 25 yards for me.

I also switch between Glocks and 1911s perfectly happily - often in the same range session. In fact other than a PM9 which gets little range use - just a few mags every now and again to make sure it's still relaible and I am still acceptably accurate with it - Glocks and 1911s are all I have, and I find the transition painless and automatic. The supposedly massive grip angle change doesn't seem to make any difference in the way I shoot. Now I'm no bullseye champ but I'm not a wild spray 'em over three lanes shooter either, and shoot both just fine back to back.

In fact the Glock points more naturally for me than anything - it's the 1911 where a slight and automatic muscle memory correction comes into play for me when I switch from one to the other.

Reset is the amount of travel you have to let the trigger out after pulling it before you can pull the trigger again. With the glock its very short and positive. With the XD the reset if much longer and not as postive. Its easyier to show you this than explain it.

When you pull the trigger, when slowly releasing the trigger you'll feel a "click." Thats the trigger resetting for the followup shot.

(of course you can't shoot fast strings with the method I just stated :D )

When I first started shooting Glocks I thought the triggers were the most idiotic things on the planet. Up until that time I had only owned two autoloaders, a P.O.S. Stoeger Arms Luger in .22lr, and a .32-caliber Walther PP. I liked the Walther, but ammo was hard to come by and expensive at the time (late 1970s-early 1980s). The Stoeger was garbage. Neither spoke to me like the S&W revolvers I owned at the time. When I started shooting Glocks I just thought I was a revolver guy.

But I shot them more and more often, and after I figured out how to use the trigger properly I started to like them. I bought my 21, but bought a CZ75B for shooting in a centerfire league. At that time I realized that for me the Glock trigger worked better than the CZ trigger. It really hit home when I borrowed a Glock 26 one night and added 100 points to my score. I bought a 26 for my carry gun and started using that in centerfire league shooting, and my scores became consistently higher. Now the CZ is a dedicated .22 with a Kadet kit conversion.

I know consider the Glock trigger the standard against which I measure all other guns. Of the dozen or so guns I own, the only one with a better trigger is my Tikka T3 Light, which has a Sako trigger group. I'm not saying those of you who don't like Glock triggers are wrong--I know where you are coming from. I'm just saying that for me it is the best double-action handgun trigger period.

I don't think so. We would see more in use if it was a serious contender. It will probably stick around but like the SW99 and Sigma its been measured against the Glock and came up wanting. Glock Perfection.

Ya gotta give the Devil his due: Glocks have racked up one helluva impressive track record!! I have a 21, a 22 and a 30, had a 1st generation 17 and all have been "to hell and back" reliable.

Glock gets my vote.

Okay, then I guess I am going to have to go shoot a Glock next week. I gotta go see what all the hype is about. I don't know as much about handguns as I probably should, so thanks for explaining to me what trigger reset is.

Yes you can shoot fast strings with it you just train your finger to release only to the sear release. It works well.
Pat

I more or less got the hang of it recently and WOW, it makes a huge difference and its great for rapid fire, double taps, whatever. My accuracy improved alot once I got the reset down over letting the trigger go fully forward. Now I can really empty those 33 rounders quick.

I voted XD for my friend Bob who died this week. He was a Glock certified armorer and traded in his Glocks for XDs and was very happy with them. I own a Glock that was a present from my wife but I really like the Xds too.

I voted Glock. I liked the way they felt in my hand over the XD. Though I really like the 1911 grips the XD didnt remind me of it at all.

Why werent there any HK pistols or Sig Pro series guns in the poll?

Glock for me.
I have handled the XD, its boxier than the Glock.

Most surprising post in this thread (to me).

The Glocks are fine weapons, but the one thing I always felt when handling any of them are they are "blocky" feeling.

The XD seems to be more ergonomically pleasing to the majority of people that hold them (compared to Glocks).

As for which is a "better" gun....that's another story. And really almost as subjective as what's "boxier".

I was amazed to read another post that said the XD was a "cheap knock-off".

It may be a "knock-off" in the sense it is very much like a Glock, but "Cheap"?

The XD has a more substantial rail, metal triggers and sights, heavier slides (for the most part), and a few features the Glocks don't have.

Glocks have been around longer (obviously), so the designers of the XD had an inherent advantage...they could take what they felt were the best characteristics of the Glock, the Sigs, what-have-you, and develop a gun from scratch with the advantage of 20 years of hindsight looking at the competition.

It's really amazing how emotional people can be about a tool. The Glocks work great, the XDs work great. One's just a bit more "up to date".

The torture test done on the XD should put to rest the one obvious advantage Glocks would seem to have....a proven track record. When the XD was subjected to a 20,000 round torture test and came up perfect, what more can one ask for?

XD would be my choice, for purely subjective reasons. Ergonomics are much better for me personally, and so is the trigger. I like the steel magazines too.

Glocks have that great tennifer finish though. Glocks are fine guns, I just shoot crappy with them.

I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said 'cheap'. It's just that I've noticed some quality control issues with Springfield that don't seem to exist with Glock. How many parts does the XD have vs. the Glock?

If the 1911 had been designed by Glock you wouldn't need to tinker with it to get it to function reliably.

XD for the grip angle, metal mags, and what the trigger can be with a little tuning. I've shot several glock models over the years and the grip angle points too high for me. The grip angle is a deal-killer; if it doesn't point well, I don't buy it.

The metal mags are a disadvantage in this case as they hold 3 less ammo. The trigger sucks.

This thread is getting pretty funny, especially since the Springfield XD series really has not been around long enough to gain any sort of reputation like the Glock has. I suppose that if an XD-9 were dropped out of a plane at 30,000 feet and did not disintegrate prior to hitting the ground it would be a great handgun? My next purchase will be a two-tone ported XD-40 with night sights. I believe it is the V10 model.

There is no more irrationally loathed pistol manufacturer on earth then Glock.
...and if you started a poll, "which is the better battle rifle, m1 garand or glock 17?" you'd have a certain number of people voting for the latter.

you can't remove fanboyism from a poll. it's expected.

Are you serious? Tennifer....and if'n you're really gonna abuse a Glock, get the Cerakote over the Tennifer. I think that finish could withstand the salt breeze off of the sun.

Well, I own a Glock 19, 21, 23, and 27 but the wife owns an XD40. Personally, I voted for the XD and as soon as the 5" XD45ACP comes out, I'll be buying one...that the wife will probably snatch up and claim as her own.:scrutiny: Oh well, she does have good tastes. :)
No, the reason I like the XD better is the better ergonomics than my Glocks. I guess I never had a problem with the way the Glock fit my hand (nor a lot of other designs) but the XD is a very comfortable weapon to shoot. Accuracy of her XD40 has been better than my Glock 23 but my USP-40C trumps both of them in that department.:neener: True, the Glock does have the better finish but being an old jarhead and brininging the Air Force wife up to Marine standards of weapons care, rust has never been an issue with the XD. Just clean your weapon and you don't have problems. If you're some sort of slob, then by all means go for the Glock but I was taught better than that so for us, it's a non-issue. The point about the Glock having a lower bore axis making for faster shooting is pretty much over-blown. I've compared my G21 against several other full size .45s including my USP-45F, Sig P220, SW99, P90, 1911 USGI and an EAA Witness and while the Glock does shoot a little faster, we're talking like only 2-3 hundreths of a second. .02-.03 seconds faster yes, but not so fast that it makes that much of a difference in the grand scheme of things.

+1

Doesn't matter. They can all be jealous of my Glock 20.

For all the reasons mentioned, I prefer Glock. Even with Springfield now going with Tennifer, the Glock still has a lower bore axis and shorter trigger reset, as well as a host of aftermarket parts and accessories. It also doesn't have that retarded grip safety, which IMO only proves to complicate what is supposed to be a simple, no frills weapon system. It is just one more thing to break when you need it the most and it is my understanding that JMB didn't even want the grip safety on the 1911--so why people would put it on something else, I have no idea.
