Pistol to carbine legally?

A shooting buddy just bought a few 30rd. mags for his 9mm 5906 pistol. They haven`t proven to be 100% reliable but they`re just for fun range use anyway. He was saying that with these huge mags the gun should really be a carbine. I mentioned that would be a legal no no to put a stock on a pistol with such a short barrel. Then he says with a sly look, why not afix the stock to the magazines so it`s not part of the pistol? Huh....I`d never thought of that. I`m guessing it`s probably still not legal though, that seems too easy. Sure would make a fun plinker though. Anyone know the legalities of such a wierd hybrid or have a link to something that would outline it? It`s kinda goofy but it piqued my curiosity. Marcus

Still a No-No, sadly.

Common sense and the government aside, it seems to me that whatever the frame is on record as is what the firearm should be. It it's a 1911 frame, it should be a handgun regardless of barrel, stock etc...
Certainly far from offering this as advice, just what common sense would dictate.

Don't forget the pistol "accessories" like the Mech Tech package that uses a 1911 grip (read that as a receiver) and makes a carbine. Legal everywhere except Kali.

If you attach a stock to the mag, then attach the mag to the pistol, you have, in essence, a stock that is attached to the pistol, regardless of the attachment point.
One stock that I have seen that "theoritically" gets around this altogether is one that fits the form of the grip, but never attaches to the pistol. It is held on only by your hand's grip on the pistol. When you let go, the stock falls off. I've only seen that one for Glocks.
Tell your friend that if he wants a carbine, he should look into the Kel-Tec Sub2000 that takes 59 series mags.... I am so very fascinated by the concept of having a pistol and rifle that use the same mags.

Illegal to attach a stock to a pistol w/o paying the tax no matter how you do it. Besides, attaching the stock to the mag would affect functioning.
Better to find a Kel-Tec or a Marlin Camp Carbine instead.

A shooting buddy just bought a few 30rd. mags for his 9mm 5906 pistol. ... He was saying that with these huge mags the gun should really be a carbine. He could get a 9mm Marlin Camp Carbine to share the S&W 59 series mags with the pistol.
What brand mags are they? Do they work well?

I pretty much figured all of the above, but I said I`d ask around and I did. :) I used to have a 9mm Camp carbine, sold it years ago :banghead: it was pretty cool especially with a 4X wide angle scope on it. The Kel tec 2000s are cool too,I just talked a buddy into getting one a few weeks ago. Fun to shoot, not as accurate as the Camp carbine by a long shot, terrible trigger :( . My buddy that got me started on this thread already has a Cobray Mac-11 carbine for plinking and such so he really doesn`t need another one he`s just goofy. :D The mags are unmarked gunshow cheapies and it shows, they work more often than not but that`s the best I can say for em. They are not common, and I don't know how it could be done with a moving barrel pistol, but there have been carbine kits in which the stock and a long (16") barrel were fixed together in an assembly. To convert the pistol to the carbine, the barrel was removed from the pistol and the frame and slide inserted into the stock-barrel assembly. That way, the stock could never be used with the short barrel.
The only system like that that acheived any popularity was made for a little Astra .22 pistol, but there were a couple of others.
AFAIK, that type of system was never banned; they were simply not economically viable. I would check with BATF, but I don't believe there would be any problem in making up such a rig.

Jim, that sounds like the CCU thingies for the Glock and 1911.
