I saw a demonstration once by a goucho, S American cowboy from Argentina or someplace thereabouts. Wow! Gave me a new appreciation for what I thought were interesting toys!
Never tried it myself- looked too easy to hurt myself while learning the technique.

The closest I used to such things is a sling. Similar principle though takes a little practice to get the aim. Great for building arm strength up, though never hunted with such style weapons.
