It's common. 99-44/100 % of the instant check denials are because of screw ups in the system. It happened to me. here in Iowa we get an annual permit to acquire psitols and if you have one the dealer never does the check. Instead the sheriff's department runs the check at renewal time. So I didn't see the actual stated reason for denial on mine but the bottom line is they had the record screwed up.
It took me six weeks to get the mess ironed out.

When I get that BS it is usually 'activity level' related. Simply buying too many guns in a certain amount of time gets you put on 'the list'. If you haven't done one on paper in a long time chances of a delay are good too.

I got delayed a couple of times when buying at a gun show on Saturday. Dealer said High call volume was the cause for delay. said by law if they do not get back to him in 3 days he could sell me the gun. Picked up my guns 3 days later.

I get "delayed" every time. :banghead: I can't decide whether it's because share a last name with my famous relative who's an ex-con that now has his own Radio talk show or if it's because I had a Special Background Check Security Clearance while I was in the Army, and that makes the computer go "PING" when my FFL calls ISP/NICS.
Either way, after I hand my FFL the cash, he just says, "See you in a couple of days.", before he even makes the call. :banghead:

Been delayed once, didn't ask why.
We just finished the deal and made a date to pick it up next week.
The dealer has a security camera outside, when I got to the door he was hanging up the phone and getting my gun for me.

yeah, I get delayed every time too.
I thought my last name was too Italian for awhile, then someone suggested that it was because I had a top secret govt security clearance for my job.
Whatever it is, I wish it would go away, it's a pain in the butt

I never noticed any difference before and after I got a security clearance.

Mine always go right through. Co-Worker has this problem, though...gets delayed every time.
Finally found out it was a person with a similar name and 2 digit different SSN...Other person is serving time for kiting over $5k in bad checks.

Much of the time delays in my locale happen because the buyer
has been fingerprinted. This even has been known too happen to those
persons fingerprinted in order to obtain a security clearance. And as
someone pointed out, a delay can occur if the call center is stressed
by a high volume of calls.
