Does anyone know what type of steel is used in the manufacture of firearm magazines.
I am researching the making of an "insert" that could be placed in the middle of a cut magazine.

You have a problem because different makers and/or gun companies use different materials. some are made of stainless steel, while others are out of high-carbon steel, and in both various alloys are used. Some are spring tempered (at least at the lips) while others aren't.
Material specifications are available for some U.S. military small arms.

Thanks Fuff, What I was thinking was taking a factory Beretta .45 acp Storm mag, making a 90 deg. cut across the mag body about 1" from the bottom. Then make a "spacer/extension" to add between the mag top and bottom, then weld it together. (hope everyone can understand this very poor explination):what:
Then, I would need to make a spring or find a spring, form some of the older hi-caps, that I could modify to work in it.
Has anyone tried this before?

Yes it works. The best possible route is to take two magazines and cut them both up to make one longer magazine. Matching contours from flat stock will be nearly impossible.
You need to find a GOOD tig welder to weld them back together. The best way to cut them is with a wire EDM.
Springs are the easy and cheap part.......

HSMITH, I thought about cutting two mags, unfortunetly you can't do that with the Beretta mags. Beretta stamps a "limiting detent" chanel about 1/8' deep that runs up from near the bottom of the mag and is about 3/4" long.
My idea is to cut the mag just above this chanel and add the extension.
Plan B, find a High cap mag from another maker that can be modified for use in the CX4 Storm. I would like to get a close look at a double stack mag from a Para and maybe even a Glock. My guess is the Glock feed angle might not be close enough to the CX4.
