I shoot trap on a pretty regular basis with about 10 other fellows, seems like its split right down the middle on who uses brownining BPS and Remington 870 12 gauges. I feel the BPS is a nicer shooting gun over the tried and true 870, as you can imagine this has brought on some debate. Just looking for an informal poll and opinions. thanks

I've never shot or even held a BPS, but I imagine that with either the BPS or the 870 fit would be a bigger factor than make. My field 870 sucked for fit until I changed out the stock, now it's probably the best fitting shotgun I own.

What is "nicer shooting"?

Better balance? Breaks more birds? Smooth action?

Shotgunning is based a lot on feel, which is why Brister's seminal work was called "Shotgunning: The Art and the Science". IMO, most people who prefer the way a particular gun shoots is due to fit.

In my own opinion, a stock 870 generally fits me a hair better than a stock BPS. Either one could fit me perfectly after a smidge of work.

Personally, I prefer Model 12s. :)

This is like choosing between Blondes and Redheads, A pointer or a Lab, Ford or a Chevy.

I would take the Browning BPS, due to the top tang safety.

Which fits you best? That would be the gun I went home with. I have both, and they both work great, but have features one may like over the other. Bottom vs side eject, tang safe vs trigger guard safe, and weight.

For all of the above - why choose? Get 'em all! :D

(Oh, yes - shotguns too!)

Apples to apples....

Sinistrally adept folks (Left handed) may find the top safety on the BPS easier to learn. The bottom ejection is a plus in the marshes and a debit on the range.

The 870 runs a bit lighter. More accessories and stuff like extra barrels are available. The modular construction makes the 870 easy to clean well, the superb design means it runs well dirty.

The BPS is a nice, reliable pump gun. So is the 870. Win/Win situation.

Falling back on my own cliche, get the one that feels best...

I always admired the BPS until I actually got to shoot one at the skeet range @ Ft. Bragg. My friend had a new one and we traded it back and forthe on the field. By the time we got through station 6, the butstock came loose.
Needless to say, I've got 3 Remingtons.
I was fortunate enough fairly recently to acquire a Light 12 and just love the thing....when it functions right.

You know what they say......'when your Browning breaks...trade it for a Remington.'

Being that WW, Preacher, is a brunette, I refrain from comment...
