Maybe "Youth?" Does it have a short buttstock and is in 20 ga or smaller? Just a guess.

It is a 12 ga. with a full length stock, and set up for shooting trap. The "Y" is the first character in the serial No., so I suspect it has something to do with the year it was manufactured. My other concern is; does the "Y" in the serial no. affect the price? The gun looks to be in good shape and the guy is asking $500. Is it a fair price for the goods?

It's all too confusing to me, but the short story is that Winchester discontinued the "real" Model 12 field model in the late 1950s/early '60s (along with a lot of their popular firearms), but kept making some Model 12's and then reintroduced them. Then there is the stigma of the whole pre-64/post-64 quality issue that we still see in the Model 70 rifle.

The Y appears on Model 12's produced from 1964 to 1980 according to the Blue Book.

Looking in the post-1964 section of the Winchester shotgun listing, there're notes that say the field model with the Y was produced from '72 to '75. "In 1984 Y series Model 12s were once again available through a private contract with USRA Co. which included engraving on Grades 1A-1C and 2-5. These guns were available in either Field, Trap or Skeet configurations."

Here are the Blue Book prices that are probably all you wanted to know in the first place...

Model 12 Trap Grade - straight or Monte Carlo stock, 30" bbl., recoil pad, 1972 to 1980.

100% = $750
98% = $675
95% = $575
90% = $525

Here are the listed prices for the pre-64 Trap gun, made from 1938 to 1964:

100% = $1200
90% = $700

The Pre-64 were a bit more machined guns IIRC, and were able to 'slam fire' when you held the trigger down and just pumped the gun. They added a trigger disconnect after 64' and a few more stamped parts to try to compete with 870's. Still a very good gun by today's standards.
