I am planning to switching my CCW from a 1911 (1918 Colt manuf) for a smaller gun. I am leaning .357, or maybe even .40

I like the reliability of wheel guns, but think that semis are better for CCW (capacity, thinner frame).

Who makes good mid sized .357 or .40 for CCW? Max on price is about $400.

What would fill the bill?

I personally like the Glock 32 for a midsize .357.

I carry a Ruger sp101. It's 5 shot .357, stainless, w/ a pleasant rubber grip.
I find it very easy to conceal. Nice power, easy to line up on target. The only drawback is that its only 5 shots but in an actual exchange at close range thats enough IMO. Cost me $325 new.

Do you mean .357 Magnum a revolver cartridge, or 357 SIG which doesn't have the "." in front of 357 because it is really a bottlenecked high velocity 9mm (.355 caliber).
For a .357 revolver my Rossi Snubbie is a great buy. I got it for 200$. Taurus is also a good value. I would get a S&W or a Ruger though. That is what I plan on getting next (revolver wise).
For .357 Mag autoloaders try the Desert Eagle, also available in .44 Mag.
For 357SIG try a SIG! They did design the cartidge after all.
Also They make XD's in 357SIG.~Nathan

For a quality .357 revolver, S&W comes to mind immediately. Unfortunately, it will not be within your $400.00 max price. Maybe a used one will fall into your price range.

Since he said ".357 or .40" and that "semis are better than revolvers for carry", I am guessing he means .357SIG and is looking for a semi

Depends on how small you want to go.

For pocket guns, you are looking at the Kahr 40s or XD 3" subcompact or CZ 2075 Rami. Unfortunately, neither makes 357SIG guns in this size.

A little larger than pocket, you are looking at the Sig p239, Springfield XD 4", Beretta Cougar 8357/8040, Steyr M357/M40 and the various Glock models, all of which come in either 357SIG or 40. There are also Smith & Wesson 3rd generation 40s.

Yellowlab:

Save your money and buy a Sig P239 in 40 you will not regret it. Just search Sig P239 on this sight and you will find alot to support that decision.

If you're going to go with a S&W 640 or similar, you'll only have 5 shots and it is a handfull. I've qualified with mine for the the past 7 years - it's still a handfull. I got a Glock 32 --- 13+1 --- it shoots like a 9mm with 357 energy. Who could ask for more? Take the time to lay a 640 (or any J frame) on top of a 32 and you'll be amazed at the relative sizes and weights. While I love my 640, I carry my Glock 32 as a CCW/off duty weapon. With a tritium front sight and a ghost ring rear you're ready for everything.
