Modern blasphemy!

So I've grown up shooting all of my bolt action rifles with a scope, except the .22s. I have a Remington 700 BDL in .270 Winchester that my dad bought me for Christmas when I was 13. Currently, it is topped off with a B&L 4-12x40mm. Lately I've had the strange notion that I want to take the scope off and replace it with a good peep sight setup. I've never really used this rifle past 400 yards. The reason for the higher magnification scope is that I used to use it for varmint hunting as well as deer. But now I have a dedicated varmint rig so that's not an issue. Does anyone have a peep setup like the Williams or Lyman on a bolt action sporter? How do you like it? Also, maybe some of the people who have hunted in the pre-scope days could give me some wisdom on the subject. Thanks in advance!

Dan, sure, Lyman #66(?) or Williams peep sights (nice and big) as back ups. Inside 200 work just fine. I'll show you my M94s sometime.

If I'm shooting grass rats, I would go optical as the front ramp can cover the rat especially at 300 plus. YMMV.

I have a NECG peep on my Ruger #1 (45/70). I was surprised how well I shoot with it. However, much on my hunting is in low light conditions and the front sight can be very hard to pick-up.
