eBay charged with violating Patriot Act

A federal prosecutor has alleged that eBay's PayPal payment service violated anti-terrorism laws for providing payment services to online gambling companies, according to the company's 10-K filing.

The company received a letter late last month from the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Missouri that contended PayPal's "services to online gambling merchants violated ... the USA Patriot Act, which prohibits the transmission of funds that are known to have been derived from a criminal offense or are intended to be used to promote or support unlawful activity."

Regardless of what one feels about gambling, or the fact that the USG doesn't seem to understand that the Internet is international, and that what is illegal in one jurisdiction may be legal in another, this is by no stretch of the imagination protecting us from terrorism.

It never was.

But it's okay, folks. Nothing bad can happen here. This is America, after all. Our government will always be good, no matter how many checks and balances are removed.
