Tell me about the Garand

Ok, I'm probably going to pick one of these up (especially since I overpaid on my taxes).
I've been running across refrences to these for a while now and the article in SWAT kind of did it for me. I did read many of the the old posts here that I could find about them, and was wondering what anyone else could tell me about them. So far most of my purchases have been revolvers and I'm looking to get a good milsurp rifle.

Go join a CMP-affiliated gun club. There has to be one in your area. www.odcmp.com/services/clubs/Wyoming-WY.pdf
Go and shoot a match with the CMP-affiliated gun club.
Go and send for a genuine military surplus M1Garand for $500, complete with the war dings and scratches.

the garand is a darn good rifle and capable of impressive accuracy.do not attempt to shoot anything hotter/;heavier than standard '06 loads through it or it WILL bend your op rod bigtime.the danish stuff out there is good stuff, shoots great and cheap.youll learn how not to insert the en bloc clip of 8 shots after the first time the bolt slams shut on your thumb(lol).you can later get the sarco kits to convert your 30-06 to .308 if you like, theyre great kits(had a tanker copy built up in this caliber).i also had a mint(except a op rod which i replaced cause i bent mine..lol) 44 dated springfield garand that i shot very little due to a bad back, they are heavy, robust guns built to last, had to eventually part with it for something lighter.can get replacement walnut stocks through the net and parts everywhere.the mil surp are fine shooters,a real bargin in some cases.

8 points in favor of a CMP Garand
Get a Garand at www.odcmp.com
-It's a piece of American history, a fine example of American ingenuity - and delivers a wood & metal connection to USA's proud history
-Can be used for anything from plinking on up to serious High Power competition
-Can be used for hunting large animals (be sure to use the right ammo, the pressures of modern factory softpoint hunting ammo can be too high for a Garand)
-Ammo – You can still find deals on Danish & Korean military 30-06 FMJ. 30-06 ammo will always be available and reloadable.
-Once they're gone from CMP, they're gone and you'll pay much more than $500 for one
-Matches - Garand-specific competitions have sprung up all over the country. The Garand match is a great excuse to go to Camp Perry in August and shoot rifles with thousands of the finest men and women in the world
-An accurate, long-range BATTLE RIFLE with excellent, adjustable, bombproof sites
-blam-blam-blam-blam-blam-blam-blam-blam-PING!

I think you will find the following website a LOAD of help.
Click all the butons on the left side particularly our garands and CMP Garands.
I put this site and a good portion of this site which is now on the CMP website together a few years back and I think it will fit your bill.
Enjoy!

They are real big, and real heavy. Nothing like the plastic stuff we have today. It inspires confidence.
I am on my second one. It is a must have, let's face it.

note the correct pronounciation of John Garand's last name is:
GAIR-und
NOT
gah-RAND
How do I know this...John Garand told me so himself. We honor the man by saying his name correctly.

Has anyone had any problems with the throat/bbl of the rack grade rifles?
How are the bbls on the service grade rifles? Is this worth the extra $100?
Has anyone received any rifles from the CMP that have needed work on them? From the disclaimer on the order form, it seems like this might be the case sometimes.
Thanks.

I got a SA/SG from CMP.......all I did was clean up the stock (all dark walnut) with some Murphys Oil Soap........
tore down the rifle.....punched the bore..........made sure everything was lubed..........
and went shooting!!!!!
The rifle came in wonderful shape.........wood was slightly dirty, hence the cleaning........the rifle parts were very clean and lightly lubed with oil........I could have shot the rifle the minute I got it.

Weird thing about the Garand is its weight. The scale says it weighs 9 lbs. But when you pick it up and handle it, and shoot it, you'd swear it was more like 7.5 lbs. I dunno if its balance, or ergonomics, or just plain cool factor, but that thing does NOT weigh 9 lbs unless its on the scale.
Or mebbe after a 20-mile march. Haven't tried that yet.

Speaking strictly from my own experiences....
I own in excess of 10 CMP M1's. With one exception, all are Service Grade rifles.
Some have come in relatively clean, others well soaked in oil & grease or cosmo. All have needed a full breakdown for cleanup and re-oil & lube. All function as an M1 should, no problems there.
You can see my rifles at: www.swampworks.com/SwampysStuff-Home.html
Of the Service Grades I've received, Just a shade over half have barrels that are either new or like new. The rest have barrels I'd call Very good to Excellent.
Speaking on reports of Rack Grades that I've read on the net, the CMP's own descriptions of grading MUST be considered. A Rack Grade may have either a more worn muzzle, higher TE, or more abused wood than a Service Grade. Net reports bear this out on numerous occasions.
If you want a GOOD shooter JUST AS YOU RECEIVE IT, I'd definitely go with a Service Grade. All My SG's have had good barrels. If you are looking for a rifle that you want to immediately change out the barrel on (say for a .308), then go for the cheaper alternative.
Just my .02,
Swampy

Lots of good M1 ammo is available at www.jouster.com. If that doesn't work type Culver's Shooting Pages into a search engine.
I've had a Garand for about 15 years. I bought it to use in HP rifle matches. A re-import from Korea, it wasn't as pretty as some M1s I've seen but it shot better than I did, and still does.

If you are trying to save the hundred bucks, consider ordering a Danish service grade. It's the same price as the rack grade but it meets service grade specifications. You may have to wait longer for it, though, because it looks like they have a backorder list on those.

I meant to type "Garand info" in my post above.
Having been to the range for the first time this year yesterday morning I guess "ammo" must have been on my mind.
