Garand sights

I've just realized that the rear sight in my Garand has some play in it. I can push it left/right or up/down about 1/32" or so :uhoh: . I'm thinking this can't be good. Given the 28" sight radius, that much movement in the rear sight would change the point of impact by 4" at 100 yds. On the other hand maybe it normally just sits in the middle of its range of motion, and this is normal for the rifle.

:scrutiny:

What do you guys say?

Here's a link about accurizing a Garand. The writer addresses the rear sight movement problem about 2/3 the way down the page.

I have the same problem.

On a match grade M1, you'd get a rear sight that is hand fitted. You can either peen the base and lap the aperature to fit or you can try different combinations of aperatures till you find the best fit. Also, finding good elevation pinions is getting tough these days.

A lot of guys used to just rigged a rubberband to pull the aperature over to one side.

I've seen people use the rubber band trick too.
