Goat Attacks Florida Man
POSTED: 10:13 am EST February 22, 2006
UPDATED: 10:46 am EST February 22, 2006
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A Jacksonville man said he was forced to shoot a goat after it attacked him, according to a report.
Richard Butler told authorities he was getting out of his car when a goat charged at him.
Butler said he grabbed the animal by the horns and wrestled it to the ground.
After about five minutes, Butler said he let go of the animal and started running, but the animal charged at him.
He told police he then shot the goat, injuring it but not killing it.
The animal had escaped from a neighbor's yard through a broken fence.
The goat's owner told police the goat was just playing and that he'll fix the fence.

Now if it was a sheep, we might get a bit suspicious of his motive for being there, eh ?

I used to work for a horse ranch. The people there had two wethers running around loose for pets. I used to think goats were cute but those two were the dangest nuisances. They would butt me in the back of the legs while I was carrying an armload of hay or something.:fire: I had already had one knee surgery and didn't want another.
And then at the slightest hint of rain the two goats would go up on the porch and of course do you know what on the door step. And guess who had to clean it up?
I would have loved to have turned them into coyote chow
I'm going to vote for 30-30 or 7.62*39, though a lever action in .357 would work handily as well ;) I sure wouldn't want to waste a real expensive cartridge on the little bastards :p

Billy gosts can be very mean. I got one FREE and thought how cute. That lasted about 2 days. The thing was mean. It would pitch back on its back legs and try to butt me when I was just trying to feed it. It butted my brother in law and got hit between the eyes with a 2X4. I told a girlfriend about it and she said she would take it. Well her husband shot it dead on day 2.

I had a girlfriend up in them hills that raised a couple of exotic goats... some sort of mountain critter from Europe that thought it was FUN to rear up on a picnic table and head butt you!
Still, wierd goat eyes and all, they are pretty harmless critters.
Sadly, both goats succumbed to mountain lion predation. She's also seen bears in her garden.Shooting someone's pet goat? Someone watched too much South Park.

.30-30 works great and so does .22WMR if you can get a clean shot. :D We had some that would constantly escape no matter how well we reinforced the pen, finally my dad got tired of trying to round them up constantly so he told me to shoot any of them that I saw.

My paternal grandfather used to raise goats. They were kept in a large fenced pasture that included several acres of woods. They were pretty much wild, and couldn't be caught.
Every once in a while one of the neighboring families got up a yen for cabrito and I would be summoned to 'catch' the selected yearling goat. My grandfather had an old long- barreled Winchester single shot .22, which was the appointed instrument of capture. The first time I got given the job I was but a mere stripling, and had no clue where to aim. My grandfather carefully pointed out the appropriate anatomical landmarks for a broadside heart shot, and I did the best I could at about 30 yards. The soon-to-be consumers were along for the 'capture' and laughed when the intended target kicked its hind legs spasmodically at the shot. They joked that I had shot the goat in the tail. But my grandfather assured me that it was a sure sign of a good heart shot, as intended, and told his customers to examine the goat's heart when they dressed it out. Meanwhile the goat ran off a short distance and dropped.
My grandfather was right...

I raise goats, usually have between 15-25 head. My herd is pretty tame and I've never had problems. I give them away for 4-H projects, pets or to eat. Folks usually want me to kill them if they are taking them home to eat. To make sure "it's over in a second" (because people are watching) I usually pop them through the neck with a .410 slug.
If you want to see an ornery animal, try rams. I tried raising Barbados sheep twice and ended up shooting the rams both times because they were so mean and destructive. The moment you broke eye-contact they'd butt you to the ground. Rams are dangerous and difficult to keep penned...it makes them a liability.
