Well, maybe not mandatory; but unless you are pretty salty regarding the AR rifles, you will probably learn a bit from this 1966 era training film on the XM16E1 rifle and even if you are salty, you will enjoy the historical reference and knowledge contained within:

Rifle 5.56mm, XM16E1, Operation and Cycle of Functioning TF9-3663 (1966) (http://www.archive.org/details/Rifle556mmXM16E1OperationandCycleofFunctioningTF93663)

For new AR15 owners or AR15 owners who aren't very mechanically adept this is a great explanation of the basic functioning of your rifle and will pay dividends in the future.

Neat video. Not much changes in 40 years, of course. Those cutout old-school M16 models are pretty sweet.

That's a nice piece of history. Thanks for sharing it. Now I need to do a retro-build.

Did you have something exotic in mind, or a stardard M16A1?

In retrospect (bad pun), a straight A1 on the NIB Colt SP1 lowers that are on the market now would have been cool. The ones I've handled have great balance, far lighter than the modern HBAR A2.

I ended up building a Dissipator that looks just about like a Vietnam-era Colt 605. The 605 was basically just a M16 with the barrel hacked back to the front sight, and 3-prong suppressor. The tweaked the gas system to function with so little barrel ahead of the tube. But the Dissipator achieves the same look and similar feel (with a fluted or M4-profile Dissy barrel), but with the reliability of a standard Carbine gas system.

What kind of retro project are you pondering?
