Problem with my SKS
The Silver Bullet 1719

Maybe yall can tell me whats wrong with my SKS. About 15-20% of the time when I chamber a round with the magazine fully loaded, the cartridge tends to get jammed and I have to work it out and reload it. Now I haven't had a jam while actually firing, only when chambering a round. Any suggestions on whats up?

Are you 1) riding the bolt forward at all? 2) slingshotting the bolt?, 3) overfilling the magazine?
Do not ride the bolt forward. Use the bolt lock and pull back fully, release smoothly. If not the case let us know.

Well I do tend to let the bolt fly like a bat out of heck. So I should just let it go gently?

No, gentle is bad. Brutal is good. Vigor!

Are you using the fixed 10 round box mag???
...if so you are perhaps the first person ever to have a problem with SKS ammo feeding!!

My stock SKS would constantly nose-dive rounds into what passed for a feed ramp... I've heard of others on here with the same problem. (In my case, a Norinco) I *think* in retrospect it was a feed lip issue, but I didn't know enough to diagnose that at the time.
Even Commie guns aren't always perfectly reliable. :)

Borderline weak recoil spring? The mag would hold the bullet with the most resistance on that first round. After that stripping of each successive round should get easier.
What happens if you only load 9 rounds in the mag?

DMK, I have to try that out. Im going to mess around with it sometime this weekend, and see if I can get it working right.

Intresting...........I've never heard of any feeding problems with the fixed 10 round mag. Do the s/n-s all match??
My shorty chi-comm SKS has happily digested well over 30K rounds over the last 10 years or so. Bone stock and God only knows how many rounds downrange before I got her.
Hell, I clean it at least once a year!
......and do a total field strip each 1/4 decade or so

dude, yeah all the serials match, but its one of those without any factory codes, its a Norinco BTW

hmmmm
if you know anyone with an SKS, try swapping fixed mags
..........we all know you are not trying to put 11 into the mag!! (?)

Wait, it only holds 10 :what: !! Nah, Im just kidding, I'm 110% positive I'm only loading 10. The only person I know that has an SKS is my cousin, but Charlotte is about an hour away, and he has one of those 30 round mags for his  .

we all know you are not trying to put 11 into the mag!! Funny you should say that. I was shooting my Yugo this weekend and saw an extra round laying on the bench. Of course I had to try and see if I could squeeze an extra one in. You know what. It worked. I tried it a couple times and it took and fed 11 rounds no problem. Wouldn't take 12 though. Tried that too ;)

Well Numrich has the military magazine assembly for 25 dollars, and the buttstock cleaning kit for 10.25 which equals 35.25 I don't have :( . Plus to put a 30 round magazine on an SKS is just plain wrong :D
