I'm searching for decent, cheap plinking .223 for my Sav. 12fv. It has a 1:9 twist, so probably a 62 gr bullet would be best, but I haven't found anything remarkable yet. I've ran Win FMJ 55 gr through it, Silver Bear, PMC FMJ 62gr & some Wolf, but none stands out. All will group just above MOA, but nothing spectacular. I've found some accurate hunting ammo, but don't want to squander it.

What's some other choices for practice??

a friend's rifle really shoots ultramax's and black hills blue box quite well.

you could just break down and reload... ;)

For an "off the shelf" load I'm with dakotasin. Pick a flavor of the Black Hills blue box line. I use their 52gr Hornady load for practicing reduced courses. Good enough to get the job done (for me) yet inexepensive enough to shoot.

OR

You could roll your own.

I choose not to roll my own because, well, I'm lazy... :(

Another vote for Black Hills blue box. Good stuff for the money.

I'll throw in another vote for Black Hills reloads being the most consistant performer of the lower priced stuff.

Yet another vote for the Black Hills blue box ammo. I just bought a case and used it today in my new Remington VS in .223 (52-grain). Outstanding accuracy!

I once shot a 10 round, 100 yard group of 1/4" using Black Hills ammo and a Remington 788 in .223. The best part is I was trying to be dramatic by shooting it on the ace of spades of a playing card. Great display item.

So you shot just a little over 1 MOA with Wolf ammo. But that can't be. All the "experts" on here told me that it was no good junk that will ruin your rifle.

Wolf shot very, very consistenly in my bolt gun. I don't own a semi .223 anymore, but it shoots fine in my Savage. Actually, it shot better than some ammo that was considerably more expensive.

FWIW, I shoot Wolf in several of my guns with little complaint. Fairly accurate and consistent, albeit a tad dirtier than other brands.

Lay your hands on a copy of Shotgun News and order some South African military surplus .223 from J&G Sales or one of the other places that advertise in there that sell ammo. The South African stuff is primo and very accurate. Not dirty, consistant, and cheap in price. Try it. You'll like it!
