Who carries the big bad 357?

OK i know a .45 just hitting you in the hand will make you spin around like a top.And 9mm's are so fast that you can shoot a guy 20 times in 2 seconds, and .40 is the BEST of both worlds, and a 44 will blow your head CLEEEAN OFF......but who carries the real man caliber of 357 magnum?
Like someone on this forum said"It's hard to argue with a 357,you can do it,but you end up bleeding alot.":uhoh:

I carry a .357 on my person when I can, although with most of the places I go on a day to day basis, I am sort of restricted to a truck gun, and thats a 9mm. I carry a nifty little taurus 850, which I have long since given up being "accurate" with, but with which I can punch holes all day into targets at "close-combat" range.

MY WIFE!!!!
I couldn't resist. My 5yo daughter asked if she could let the dog out back to play. we have a privacy fence closing in two back yards. We own two adjoining backyards and built a perimeter fence to keep the dogs from easily getting out. My daughter opens the door to let the dog out and a strange male voice started talking to my daughter and I was at work. My wife about freaked. She had her choice of firearms to grab, including the Sig P229 .40 but went for my S&W .357 Highway Patrolman. :what:
She met what turned out to be the TXU meter reader who felt the need to jump our fence to get to the meter. Needless to say he dropped his clipboard and his arms went high in the air followed by senseless babble. The only thing she could make out was TXU and meter. I think he had to head home for a change of clothes after that one. She advised him next time a gate is locked at least try to knock on the front door and if he doesnt and sees kids in the backyard, leave immediatly.

In the past I routinely carried a S&W model 19 or 65 on the belt off duty.
The M65 became a truck gun in a GI tool bag loaded with 125 grain .357 Remingtons, nestled in a paddle holster with some loaded speed loaders in clip on holders as well as a couple of boxes of ammo both .38 and .357. It was the perfect gun for the truck with the stainless construction and "at rest" spring condition for those long periods between range visits with it.
Today I mostly carry in the pocket and occasionly a 9mm on the belt. The .357 however still rocks my boat as I was a cop in the mid 70's on and that was the "state of the Art" in service revolvers in my area. As a result I have a 4" Model 19 I shoot IDPA with and will carry on occasion. It feels good to go "retro" every now and then and to know my 19 is still all I need. :)

in cooler months when clothing allows, ive started carrying one of 4" model 13s with two safariland comp Is
ive always liked the full sized .357. its what i cut my teeth on when i was a trooper (s&w 681).
but i dont want to "loose" it if it gets held as evidense, so the model 13 does almost as well.
if i can find a quality owb that holds it in close enough, i would carry it in the summer also.

Well, this real woman here has carried it when her favorite .45 carry gun is being tweaked by the gunsmith. My favorite is the S&W 327--a beautiful Performance Center snubby that's so well-tuned it doesn't kick that bad. 8-shot capacity, cocobono grips. Love that gun. Only drawback is the fat cylinder, but for a gun like that I'll risk being thought of as somewhat fat.

After she and her dog were chased by a javelina, she decided the old S&W Model 19 needed to go beyond its home defense duties.

Since any barrel length less than 4" takes away from the magnum's performance, I do Not carry .357's on my person. I stick with normal pressure Hornady hollowpoints in .38 spl.
Before I sold the majority of the collection to stay afloat while unemployed, I used to have a 4" full underlug Ruger GP-100.
In the house, it was stoked with .38 +p's and 1 speedloader with Hornady XTP 158gr .357's. If the gun was to be used in the vehicle, I switched out to the magnums.
Not exactly "carry" the magnums, but available when needed.

Taking a long, hard look at the Ruger SP101 today myself. 2 1/4 inch barrel and an impeccable design. It would be my first .357, and it would certainly get some hip-time along-side my glocks and my S&W 442. Yes, I suppose I should stick with only one carry peice, but it's kinda like dating: So many, so little time.

Thanks for the shot! Love the "Big, Bad .357's!" Being a wheelman at heart doesn't hurt either!
Question for the more history oriented. Seems I recall a story concerning a Texas DPS Trooper (back in the '80's?) who put 3 - .357 rounds in the mid section of a big guy with a heck of a gut and the guy lived. Any truth to this?
Guess I should of checked the "library" but thought someone might know about it.

Hey, Mannlicher, I carry a Model 65 too, but mine is a Taurus. I also stuff mine with handloads. The little boot grips in the picture are great for IWB carry. Usually I carry my .357 with the factory rubber grips, which are also great for extended sessions at the range. Sometimes I use wooden target grips when I want to show off a little. They work fine for about 50 rounds of full-house .357s, but I like the rubber ones on the rare occasion that I shoot more than 50 rounds of hot stuff during a session.

I love resurrected old threads! I've had a GP100 for years, but more for a woods gun and plinker than for concealed carry. Just got an SP101, though, and I've started carrying that a good bit. It's a great concealable platform for the .357.

Always good to see this thread revived! I've had my S&W .357 Model 65-3 "K" Frame since '87. She's as crisp and smooth as she was when I got her!

Both my wife and I carry Blackhawk .357's when in the "Piney Woods"...particularly after seeing one heckuva a large cougar on a part of our place...
She has become quite comfortable with the OM Blackhawk...and, as you guys know, practice is cheaper and more pleasant ( on a frequent basis ) w/.38's or w/the convertible 9-m/m cylinder in..tho' she does fire a couple of cylinders full of mags regularly...

SP101 in a fanny pack, 125 gn full power loads. Had it ported at MagnaPort and it made it more controllable for follow up shots.

I carry a Smith 19-5, 2 1/2". Carrying a K frame is much easier than many folks think.

In the truck, once I figure out a good jerry-rigged setup under my dash---too small of a glove box to hold even a regular 4".

I too carry a 357 5-shot SP-101. Although it's kinda small and nice. Stainless, shaved hammer and action job.

I carried a .357 for over twenty years but for the last five years it's been a 40S&W.
I could be wrong but if my memory serves me it seems the .357 had a reputation for posting like 97% success at one shot stops in most case studies done (at least in any studies I've read) which I also believe is around the same order of the .40S&W. No?

Not from what I've read. The data I've found over the past several months still says the .357 is the king.

I'm a relative newcomer to wheel guns -- about a year I guess. Been reloading since the first month. I also have a Rossi snub .38. It shoots great and carries really nice, but since I bought my .357 I use the .38 mostly for backup. I wish I had bought a short-barrel .357 instead of the .38 special model. :banghead: I like carrying both guns at the same time though.
I see you like the wood grips too. I like small grips for everyday carry use. For lengthy sessions at the range I run a lot of rounds through with the big grips on, then change to the smaller ones long enough to be sure I remember how they feel in the event of an emergency.
Nice K.

My Taurus 608 - 8 shots of 130gr. Federal Premium JHP's (1300 fps/498 ft. lbs.) - 4" ported barrel, stainless... I was able to steal this one for a really good price. It's heavy - 44 oz. unloaded - so it probably won't see carry much until it gets a little colder up here. My main carry gun is a .357 Sig.
