Frandy February 24, 2006, 03:28 PM My dealer has a used one (stainless) for $350. Bore looks good, cylinder tight, I love the looks. Single action trigger is crisp! I owne a full lug 4" stainless model and like it, but this 6" sure appealed to me.
Anyone have one (Hawaiian does, right)?
Anyone have opinions on them?
Why did they stop making the 1/2 lug?
Any info appreciated. Thanks!

mec February 24, 2006, 03:40 PM I was told that since they cost the same as a full lug people felt like they should get more metal for their money. The heavy lugs were more popular. I prefer the short lug myself:

clown714 February 24, 2006, 06:51 PM I,think they balance better.
mines got over 2K thru it.
tight as the day it was new:)
LeonCarr February 24, 2006, 07:00 PM Have one blued and one stainless. $350 for a half lug is a good price. Buy it.
Just my .02,

fecmech February 24, 2006, 08:07 PM When I bought mine new (6") I looked at both and bought the one without the lug. IMO the gun is heavy enough without hanging more iron on the bottom of the barrel.
Hawaiian February 25, 2006, 07:31 PM Yep, I have one and made the choice simply because I liked the looks of the short lug better. It is a great shooter.

Skipper February 25, 2006, 07:36 PM My favorite GP. The GP and the SP are my favorite 357's. Buy it.

Surefire February 26, 2006, 02:50 AM My favorite GP. Balance is exceptional IMO.
Has the sight radius and velocity of a "6", and the balance of a "4".
I consider the 6" short lug to be the ideal GP.
MikeJ February 26, 2006, 06:55 AM I have the 6" half lug and love it. The full lug doesn't balance nearly so well for me.
Stainz February 26, 2006, 08:20 AM When I was ready for a 'smaller caliber', I couldn't find a short lug GP or S&W 686, so I bought a new closeout 66-6 in 6". Fantastic revolver. Of course, S&W had to make a 'Stocking Dealer Exclusive' the next year (04) of a half-lug 686+ 5"-er with Ahrends cocobolo stocks, a HiViz front, and a V-notch rear, so I added that. I am still looking for the first h-l GP to add to my collection... I just don't like full lugs.

I use mine (along with my full lugged4") to guiltlessly plink away with full .357 loads. It seems disinclined to shoot loose. This one and one I had years before are extremely accurate with everything fitting up very well. I also lightened the action somewhat with Wolff Springs - being careful to keep a near full power mainspring for positive ignition.
For a couple of decades, good quality control was virtually assured. Recently, I have heard some credible reports of inaccuracy due to varying chamber mouths and other issues but a good example of the GP is right at the top of my .357 revolver list.
Frandy February 26, 2006, 10:27 AM Thanks everyone. If my dealer still has it, it's mine.
