i'm in the market for a new shotgun and am leaning towards the mossberg 835. i have a few questions that i think you guys could answer that i didn't see when i did a search. i really want an do all shotgun, by that i mean quail, phesant, dove, turkey, duck, and goose. will the 835 with the overbore be able to handle all my needs? will i have any problems shooting 2 3/4 shells out of it when i shoot dove and quail? will i love this gun more than an 870 or a 1300? thanks, i'll be back later with more questions.

well since no one has said anything i guess this is a bad decision. so how about a rem 870 express with an extra barrel?
is there a replacement for the plastic trigger guard? what about the j lock? thanks

I owned a synthetic stocked 835 that I used for everything from dove to waterfowl. I sometimes wish I never had sold it. I would take it hunting to places I would never take my Rem 1187 for fear of scratching it.

As long as you don't have a need to shoot slugs it will do everything you need a shotgun to do. It's a great shotgun for the money.

No, you will not love your Mossberg more than an 870 or 1300. If you want a great pump gun, I suggest the Benelli Nova. It will shoot every shell from the lightest 2 3/4" to the heaviest 3.5" mags. The stock molds over the metal of the receiver so when it rains, the only part that needs oiled is the barrel. I paid $312 for mine after taxes and such. Since then, I got a B-Square scope mount and a Leupold VX-I 2-7X33 scope to make it an excellent turkey gun. Check it out. You do not want a crappy Mossberg.

A couple answers,sorry I missed this before.

2 3/4" shells will work OK. Except for waterfowl and turkey, they're all you need.

The 835 is a decent shotgun, whether you'll love it is an open question.

As for the 870, the J lock is easily replaced, the plastic parts are not any problem and NOTHING lasts longer than an 870.

If I were getting a Mossie, I'd replace the plastic safety with a steel one from Brownell's. If an 870 Express, an old style safety from the same source.

More likely I'd get another old WM, but that's just me....
