Colt Commemorative

I have inherited a Colt Commemorative revolver in .44-40 caliber.
The pistol is blued with gold embossing. On the cylinder is Sam Colt's image. On the left side of the barrel in gold, is, " God created man, Col. Colt made them equal." On the right side of the barrel, Colt Single Action Army .44-40.
This is a "rusty nail" gun. The presentation case contains a nail from the Colt armorer's residence. There is also an extra cylinder with no embossing, although I can't see why you would want to fire this piece. It is 1 of 1,000.
I don't know when it was purchased but I believe it was late '70s or early '80s.
Any information anyone can provide about this gun would be appreciated. I have been all over the internet and have seen nothing like it in this caliber, although .45s seem common. I have had it to several dealers and even took it to the Colt museum when it was still located in Gettysburg, PA. I have been unable to pin down a firm value for this gun. Thanks in advance for any info.

Of course, the ultimate experts will be the Colt factory. You'd have to buy a Colt Historical Letter, but they will give you complete details about the gun, when it was shipped, what commemorative it was, how many were made, and any other details.

I've been to Cherry's. They no longer value guns over the net. I had hoped to avoid paying to find out about this gun from colt. I know, I'm cheap, but I may have to just do it.
