What did that laptop do to deserve such a fate?

baz, it got OLD!!! LOL. Ain't much use for an x86 laptop that probably couldn't hold over 256Meg of Ram. Can't even add network cards to it so it can be a router. Finally, it looked like it had Windoze 98 on it.

We did something similar. My local computer group (LAN Parties) had a "hardware shootout" where we all brought our broken/old equipment to shoot at. Tons of fun!

Here's a quick bandwidth-friendly snippet:

heres some fun I had with my savage .308 and an old CRT monitor, this is after the first shot, using remington 168 grain soft pointed tip corelokt, round didn't pass through, although when I switched to mil surp. they were going through. distance of about 25 to 30 meters.

I'm working in a computer shop, and we've got a laptop we plan to destroy in revenge. The durn thing has some sort of electrical contact issue with the motherboard - when you power it on it'll boot for about 2 seconds, then power down, then restart for about 2 seconds, power down, etc until you pull both the AC power and the battery. When it will boot (accomplished only by putting just the right amount of pressure on the right spots), it freezes up randomly after a few minutes. That thing is evil. I spent waaay too much time trying to make it run. After salvaging the HD and ram, our plan is to use birdshot to put a nice 4-7" hole clean through the LCD and then put it up as a display piece in the shop.

I did an old CRT monitor with a deer slug once. Not as spectacular as I'd hoped, but still danged fun.

Hey now, nothing wrong with windows 98! I used it until I got a 120 gig HD about 1 1/2 years ago, and I even had a copy of XP. The only reason I am using XP now is because of Hardware.

It was a year old and it had very little ram, but it did have mswxp.
It was not Alienware.
It had an Alienware sticker on it.
Ian.... My laptop had a similar problem.
The power plug went loose on the circuit board.
I accidentally knocked off a resistor when I resoldered the power plug onto the circuit board.
It worked fine at first.
Later, the power cut off when it was on.
The longer I left ot off, the longer it stayed on when I turned it back on.
I was able to back up my software before it cut back off.

In the end of the video, I wanted another camera angle.
I did not have anything to stand the camera on, so I held it in my left hand while I held the gun in my right hand.
All pix and videos were taken with my stun camera.

If you're lucky, you may never know how good your laptop is. I found out. On Monday, September 27th, 2004, at approximately 10:30 a.m., I was traveling from San Jose, California, to South San Francisco on Interstate 280. I was driving a Honda XL 600 motorcycle in the HOV lane with my Sony Vaio laptop in my backpack. I was running right at 95 miles per hour when my backpack zipper suffered a catastrophic failure, spilling my laptop onto the interstate.

I stopped immediately, and ran back to try to salvage what I could. I found my passport, some pencils, and a few other items before I located the laptop. The laptop had crossed all four lanes of the interstate, and was resting upside down on the shoulder. It was, of course, badly damaged. Both batteries were ripped from the laptop. The screen frame was broken. A large portion of the bottom plastic was missing. The ports in the back were badly cracked and pushed out of alignment. But when I got to the office and plugged it in, it booted right up. View more photos here (http://www.peeniewallie.com/images/2004_laptop/thumbnails.html).

Sony Vaio. What's in your backpack? ;)

If it still worked, I could probably find a way to use it. For instance, I have an old Pentium I with 96 megs of ram that does nothing but serve as a Port 22 "gateway" for me to tunnel to the rest of my home network behind my dsl router firewall. No need for 2 nics for that. Or, it it will boot Linux, I could make a snort sensor out of it. Old laptops are good candidates for packet radio appliances.

And so on.

But I do understand the thrill of shooting inanimate objects. I just personally wait until they no longer have any utility.

I'll never understand why some people fill their houses with obsolete technology to, in the end, cost more for the electricity than it'd cost to get new, smaller, and hidden stuff.

Old guns go in the safe. Old computers are about as useful as used paper plates. Sell'em, dumpster'em, or shoot'em and turn them in for recycling, let them wonder what the hell happened to it. :D

I throw old tech away. :scrutiny: It's clutter.

I love that movie.
But I do not have a tec-9 or any rap music.

I am planning on going back to the range this weekend.
I will probably take a friend of mine, his guns and cameras, my recruiter, his guns, my gun, and another laptop. :D
I am thinking...
Rage Against the Machine - Bullet in the Head
or
3 Doors Down - Kryptonite
What do you think?

Is this some kind of a test as to whether THR's moderators are more liberal that TFL's?
This same post was on TFL and it was 46 posts before the Mod shut it down as being representive of irresponsible gun ownership.
I'm curious to see how far it gets here.

You gotta be kidding me. Shooting old/obsolete/damaged electronics is some of the best fun you can have with a firearm! We have a junkyard range outside of town where anything and everything can be shot at. Refrigerators, boilers, TV's, VCR's, hard drives...and so on. The local bowling alley can't wait to get rid of their pins and I usually leave a few there after I'm done. Hanging them from trees is a hoot.

When Control/Alt/Delete doesn't work, double-hand control will.:D

No.
My thread was closed/locked at TFL so I put it here.
I'm curious to see how far it gets here.
Me too.
I have read that this site is over moderated... aka, the highly moderated road, but TFL has been over moderated lately IMO.
So... I put my video here because I want people to see it...
And I hope that I do not get sued by averatec or alienware. :uhoh:
I really loved that laptop, but I did not hesitate to shoot it after it failed me.
I had one shot at video taping it with a low end digital camera, but the video is wonderfull IMO.
Yes, I am proud of myself. :D

I took an old desktop power supply out with our gun club last semester to put it out of it misery. It was shot with my Mosin Nagant, My AR 15, another couple of AR15s, no fewer than 3 AKs, a Cetme, an SKS and a few other mil-surp rifles. I wish I had a picture of it to upload for you guys but believe me when I say that very little of it was left with about 12 people opening a can of tacticool whoopazz on it.

Today, I went to the range with a friend of mine, and my recruiter.
We shot up a singing fish, a laptop, a couple of playstations, a keyboard, and a video camera with an AK47, a tokarev, a couple of makarovs, a 1911 .45 auto, a beretta 21 .22lr, a NAA mini 22 magnum, a M4, a SKS, a 12 gauge, a derringer in .38 special, and my cz52.
We got some video before we shot the video camera.
It was fun but I do not think that the video is going to be as good as the first one.

Rage Against the Machine - Bullet in the Head ?
3 Doors Down - Kryptonite ?

I think you should send the video to the BBC and give those guys and gals a heart attack. Label it FREEDOM IN THE USA.

I once shot up a microwave oven with a .40 Glock.

On the first shot I shot right through the timer panel, and hit the dinger...it was awesome, because all you heard was "ding".

I wish I had pics of my old Isuzu Rodeo! We shot it with 4 Garands, a Springfield, all in 30 aught, with API and tracer rounds, an M14, M60, MG42, my collection of Mausers, enfields, arisakas, my mossberg 500, and remington 870, (sheds a tear over the sale of those 2) 3 22s, and an Armalite AR50 firing armor piercing incendiary tracers (isreali rounds)

You should have seen the look on the tow truck driver's face when we had it junked:D

Cool video!

I don't mean to get on a soapbox but please make sure you are cleaning up the mess when you are done. It is a lot of fun to blast stuff with guns but don't leave it for someone else to clean up.

We go to quite a few public ranges where there are shot up computers and appliances everywhere. There have been a few places closed down because of this.
