Clemson newspaper raffling AK-47The Associated PressCLEMSON — The editor of an independent student newspaper at Clemson University says he hopes a raffle featuring an AK-47 as its top prize will help get a discussion going about the Second Amendment.
So far he appears to be on his way to achieving that goal.
Calling the amendment “probably one of the least respected amendments that we have,” Andrew Davis, editor in chief of the Tiger Town Observer, said Americans need a better education about their right to bear arms.
Davis said he got the idea from a conservative student newspaper at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. English composition professor John Longo said he was one of several professors who e-mailed university President James F. Barker to express concern. Some of Longo’s students say they found a South Carolina statute that makes such a raffle illegal, but Davis said he is abiding by that law by giving the tickets away for a suggested $5 donation.
State law and university regulations prohibit individuals from having firearms on campus, and Davis said arrangements have already been made to store the rifle off campus, should a student who lives in on-campus housing win the drawing. :neener:
Davis said most of the proceeds from the raffle will pay the operating costs of the Observer, a free monthly publication that receives no money from the university. Some money will go toward a self-defense program for female students, and 20 percent is earmarked for a democracy foundation in Iran, Davis said.
Clemson spokeswoman Robin Denny said that while the university does not condone the event, it will not act to stop the raffle.
“As it’s been explained to us, the way they’re conducting this activity is within the law and university regulations,” Denny said.
