Would play this mind game sitting around the camp site, watching the fire turn into embers.

Lets say you get to outfit your self with one rifle and one pistol... 20 years later you outfit your son....and 20 years later he outfits his son...etc.

It's all in the starting date...and 1850 is a good one as it avoids some interresting dates down the road. Has to be a production tiem, as if you could wander down to the gneral store and plunk your money down.

So it's 1850...get one handgun and one rifle. In 1870, you outfit your son...he outfits his son in 1890...etc.

1850: Colt Dragoon, probably third model if it was out then (not sure), with the carbine stock attachment. For a long gun, difficult to say, as cartridge weapons weren't available at that time. I suspect I'd try for the Colt's revolving shotgun, which could also use solid ball loads, and gave you four rounds of 10ga. firepower.

1870: Probably an 1860 Army revolver with metallic cartridge conversion, which was available by then. Rifle - Winchester Model of 1866. Both would be chambered in Henry .44 Rimfire.

1890: Smith & Wesson top-break in .44 Russian. For a rifle, probably the early Marlin in .44-40, or perhaps the Winchester 1886 in .45-70 if I wanted something for heavier game.
