My personal favorite load is 40gr pyrodex p, then a dry fiber wad with a "lube pill" on top, then seat a .454 cal hornady ball on top, CCI #11 caps all in a Pietta made 1858 remington 44. Makes a nice big boom! :D I don't shoot this one every day, it's my walking around the woods and self defense load but it's fun to shoot once a month when I change my "always loaded cylinder" for fresh powder. :)

I just received my 58, but from what I've read in this forum and other places, I plan to use a 22-23 grain load of fff Goex black powder behind a 454 round ball. Use a wonder wad beneath the ball and use some top lube (crisco or "bore-butter") Probably use a #10 or 11 cap. Not sure which cap would fit best though at this point- will just have to see. How's that sound for a good target load?

That sounds like a good target load. You'll be happy with it, and don't be afraid to adjust upwards on the powder charge...some of these guns prefer a little more punch behind the ball. :) FYI, you don't have to worry with the over the ball lube if you are using a wonder wad, it will seal against chain fires and provide some lubrication to keep the fouling soft as well.

As a side note to what Low Key has stated you have to get the right caps. Remington and CCI are not the same size. CCI #10 is to small for most Remington's, Remington #10 fit great but Remington #11 is to big. CCI #11 fit great also but I prefer Remington #10 over all and my next choice would be the The German caps and they are a favorite of many on here in #1075.
Bottom is this, You may want to try the following first :
#11 CCI
#10 Remington
#1075 CWA (German)
It's my belief that you will get chain fires from loose fitting caps just as much as from loose fitting balls or Conical. Using the .454 ball your not likely to have a chain fire.
As for target loads the Remington's seen to like 30-35 g. of either Goex3f or Pyrodex "P". Some guy's like the 777 but I will let Low Key tell you about it because I have never used it. Have fun and stay safe, Mike

I've gotten the following results from a Uberti 58: Spread
28 Gr./Vol. Pyrodex P Uberti 975 66
28 Grain Goex FFFG .454 Uberti 795 31
28 Grain Swiss FFFG .454 Uberti 959 32
35 Grain Swiss FFFG .454 Uberti 1089 33
28 Grain Pyrodex P .454 Uberti 966 54
Most of these loads are simply thrown from a flask with the 28 grain spout in place (except see the Swiss 35 gr load. ) Results will vary among revolvers but Jim Taylor a writer with New GunWeek has used 37 grains with various powders and balls for over 1,000 fps and the 40 grain charges used by Beartracker are probably in the 1,000s to 1,100s with much depending on the propelllant selected and the individual gun. An alternative might be this as can be seen, the pyrodex and swiss charges might fit somebody's concept of a Best Load:

The background group was fired 1-handed from 28 yards over chronograph screens. I've gotten similar results with a Uberti 60 Army

Using my conversion cylinder I load 35 grains (volume)of American Frontier FFFg and a 250 grain RNFP Lee cast bullet. Or the same on Goex FFFg Basicly fills the case and allows for abou 1/16 or so of compression. The Goex is a better boom where the fake stuff is a crack but lots of smoke. This is my hunting load. For targets I load the precussion cylinder with abut 28-30 and a .454 home cast round ball, or 30 grains and that Lee bullet with a home cut felt wad under the bullet.. NMA Remington ROCK!!!

My little 58 Remmie .44 likes 35grs goex 3f, wool patch saturated in home-made LUBE, 454 round ball. I use #10 Remmington caps...they fit nice and snug. I press them on with a dowel rod patched with leather on the end. I recently purchased a loader to keep my extra cylinder full. I also pack down my powder and wad before I load my ball on top. That helps me to know that I have no void areas. I used to put lube over ball but I get a nice ring of lead around my ball when loading now, so I feel its not needed. Not as messy for sure! One handed( which is no small feet for this lady;) ) at 25yds, I can keep a good 4-6in group. Teresa:)
