I need .357/.38 Revolver.
#1. Has to be American made.
#2. Has to be a 6 shot.
#3. Has to have 4" barrel.
#4. (Here's the kicker) Has to be under $500 - Brand New.
Thanks!

Ruger GP-100.
Taurus of some sort
S&W 686 almost fits the criteria, but it's more expensive.

Ruger is about the only one to fill your requirements. Must it be new? There are an awful lot of great used S&Ws out there.Colt troopers (which would be my pick for this exercise) can be had also for your price range.

Should be possible to find a 4" S&W 686 new for well under $500.

At this exact moment on www.gunbroker.com
Brand New, +$10 for shipping, estimate $20 FFL fee:
Ruger GP100: "Buy it Now" @ $403 (blued) or $411 (stainless)
S&W 686: "Buy it Now" @ $470
That's about the size of it. Now you just need to pick which one of those you want.

I see you say it has to be new, but why? You can buy two of those Model 10 police turn-ins for under $500, or a bit over and they are usually as good as new with only a little holster wear. You can easily fit a Model 15 or even a used Model 19 or 686 into the $500 figure and have enough money left to buy a good bit of ammo.

Gotta agree with Jim. there are literally scads of lightly-used .357s out there going begging for $350 and less. Why not take advantage of a buyer's market?
Ruger, S&W, Dan Wesson, and even the "working" Colt models like the Trooper meeting all of your criteria are all out there for a lot less than you imagine. Many of them will show a bit of holster or handling wear but be nearly pristine where it counts.

I'm a big fan of jim march's checklist, whether buying new or used.
Usually, you'd think a new gun would have a better chance of passing, but that has not been my experience.
When you fondle a used gun, don't just see how it handles, give it the checklist, even if you're not thinking of buying it.
If you buy a gun that has to be ordered, you can't inspect it before you make your decision to buy it, and if you buy a good used gun from someone who took care of it (Someone you know.) then it's more likely to have already passed the checklist, or failed, and was brought back to 100% before selling.

Ruger, IMHO, the best quality going for the price.

im pretty sure taurus is manufactured in brazil. someone else might be able to chime in on this but im almost positive. therefore Rossi are out too, as they are owned by taurus.
i own a few rugers and i would definatly say go for one. older colts are US made, a used python might fit your bill.

Probably limited to a Ruger.
a used python might fit your bill.
When was the last time you saw a used Python for under $500? I'm sure plenty of people here would love to know.

can't go wrong with the GP100 or 686.

SouthPaw, don't give him too much trouble. As of right now, I know where two used 4" Python's are sitting waiting on a buyer, in the $500-550 range. I'm looking at the second one Monday and will take one of the two home with me.
Not all dealers give in to speculation and increase their prices through the roof based solely on that.

A couple of months ago? I picked up a 6" Nickel with a leather shoulder holster at the gun show for $450. The nickel is rather worn (from the holster I guess) in the last inch of the barrel on one side. Other than that its in good shape. An excellent shooter.
I also see 4" blue ones (most common size/finish I seem to see around here) with heavy holster wear, but in good mechanical condition in the mid/upper $500s from time to time, with some haggling they could probably be had for $500.

need .357/.38 Revolver.
Good choice, everyone should have one!
#1. Has to be American made.
Not to get political, but why limit your choices this way?
#2. Has to be a 6 shot.
Why 6shot when there are also 5 and 7 shot choices that are good?
#3. Has to have 4" barrel.
I can understand this, my first (and currently only) .357 is a 4" as personaly I didn't want a longer barrel and my next revolver will be a shorter barrel
#4. (Here's the kicker) Has to be under $500
There are a number of good choices
- Brand New.
This will limit some of those choices, and again I must ask why limit yourself with this preference?
Don't get me wrong, I understand the appeal of "new" but a good quality lighty used (not abused) will cost less and work just as well (if not a little better) and depending on who makes it, would still be covered under warranty
Also, do you have a specific use in mind for it, or looking for an all around??

Seriously consider a used Dan Wesson in .38/.357. You can get them with changeable barrels (easily done) in lengths from 2 to 12 inches. Mine has a 4 and 6 inch option. The DA trigger pull is relatively short, the action good, and they're pretty easy to find holsters for, should you require one. And, they're around the $350 mark, used of course. Very accurate, and dead reliable.
Next would be a Ruger GP100 or a S&W, if you must buy new.

Why do you demand it's "brand new"? You're just paying extra to break it in yourself. Get a used GP-100.

Taurus is indeed made in America.
waits for flame.......
You don't want one though (new Ruger and old S&Ws are better)....
You didn't say "North" America did you? :neener:
My wife's from "Central" America and she gets on me for this all the time.
I don't listen to her either.

Another vote for the S&W 686, or Ruger's GP-100~!:D
