Golly, does this mean that the dangerous perps actually targeted by this hand-in are ignoring it, while other people are turning in guns they'd never use in crime? I'm shocked, shocked.

More than 800 guns have been handed in as part of the Met's gun amnesty in London- but the public response in some boroughs has disappointed police.

The amnesty, which began two weeks ago and finishes later this month, called on people to hand in illegal weapons and ammunition without fear of prosecution.

861 guns and 18,152 round of ammunition have already been handed in, but the reaction in some boroughs has been muted.

"The boroughs of Brent, Hackney, Haringey, Lambeth and Southwark have been especially poor in their response," a statement from the Metropolitan police said.

Police urged community leaders, and family and friends of anyone who had an illegal weapon, to encourage them to hand them in.

AC Tarique Ghaffur of the Specialist Crime Directorate said the amnesty would finish on 30 April, and police would take weapons in, without asking questions, up until this date.

"When the amnesty is over, police will be thorough, co-ordinated and pro -active in their fight against gun crime."
