Buying an AK... Details of a dealer transfer?

What do I need to know to do a dealer transfer? Do you contact the local dealer first and then when they say it's okay you call up the source you are buying the gun from to verify that your local dealer is good to go through? Do they handle all the paper work and junk for you?

Here's what I'm buying:

http://www.aimsurplus.com/acatalog/rilfes.html

The SAR-1 for $299.

The local shop has it for $379 and I'm actually going to ask the local place if they'll come down on their price at all. It would be much more convenient for me if they would... then I wouldn't have to figure out how you do all that transfer junk. Dang I just wish you could mail order a rifle straight to your house! Anyways, I figure If I can get the local place to come down to like $340 it'll be worth it, because that $299 price will end up being +$20 shipping and +$20 transfer fee. And I figure even though I would have to pay tax locally, the convenience will be worth it. I have read other posts on here though about how people in gun shops thinks customers that come in and show them prices off the internet to get it lower are jerks! Oh well, I'll just be a jerk then.

You need to find a local dealer that will handle the transfer for you. I get the FFL of the local dealer, and send it with payment to the seller. Some shops won't give you their signed FFL - in that case I used to ask the dealer if they'd send their signed FFL to the seller. If not, you'll need to find another local dealer. If you can send payment with the FFL - great. If not, send it in another envelope. When the seller gets the signed FFL and payment, they'll ship the gun to the local dealer. When it arrives you go down and fill the out the required paperwork. It's been awhile since I did this, so wait for some other replies to see if this is still the accepted process.

Rick has it.

I pay $10 per transfer around here (a gun store and a guy with an FFL running out of his house both offer that ... better than the 10% the other big store asks).

I'll not comment on the "jerk" aspect of it.

I think as long as you make it clear that you understand the internet price is going to be lower do to reduced costs and such and you don't try to make him match that price you won't come off like a jerk. Also be aware that he may not be able even buy the gun at the price someone else is selling it at, though, I doubt that will be the case here. Good luck..

Don't haggle too much with your dealer. Those guys put up with a lot of crap from the ATF to give you service and they deserve to make some money.

Instead of asking for a discount, try to get some free ammo instead. You'll save the same amount and it costs the dealer less.

The Romanian SAR is an excellent AK, especially at that price. It has 6 US parts so it's considered American made. It is legal to have a pistol grip stock and take high capacity magazines.

Be prepared to clean it when it arrives. It will be FULL of grease. The finish is very decent but the stock probably won't match the foregrip.
It will probably have a nifty side-mount for a scope.
It's a reliable as any other AK. You'll be happy.

My AKs are a Norinco pre-ban and a Bulgarian SLR-95 but if I was gonna buy another one I'd also get a romanian SAR.

Try to bargain with him on the price and see if he will cut it down a bit. If he won't come down too much then I seriously doubt he will let you use his FFL to order the exact same weapon he has on his shelf. Doing that would be the same as him selling you the one he has in his inventory at the price you wanted in the first place.

Try taking a peek over a gunbroker.com and using their dealer search database for a dealer within your zip code willing to do a transfer if the first dealer is unwilling to do the transfer.

"Also, he may not be as friendly when you need accessories or service or help when you don't buy from him."

AMEN to that! The few extra bucks you spend at a friendly local dealer buys you SERVICE. It's well worth it when you need it.
Please support your local dealers.
I don't even buy at guns shows because I've gotten to know my local dealer quite well. I tell him what I want and ge gets it for me. I spend maybe 20 extra bucks and I've never regretted it.

This thing is messy! It's covered in oil. I'll probably be cleaning it for hours.

Wait until you buy one packed in cosmoline. That'll take days to get off! :)

Wait until you shoot it the first time and it starts leeching out of the nooks and crannies! :D

Ohh..and your next question will probably be how to deal with the dreaded trigger slap. But don't let me jinx you...shoot her first!

If you do have some, then check this place out for the fix..

Thanks for the link! I probably wouldn't even know what trigger slap is though :)

I asked this over in the ak boards at ar15.com, but is this type of thing normal for these romanian ak's or would you all exchange it for another one?

A little rust: http://u.cc.utah.edu/~gmj06b50/Guns/AK-47-SAR-1-scopemount.jpg
Crack in stock: http://u.cc.utah.edu/~gmj06b50/Guns/AK-47-SAR-1-stock.jpg
Stock/foregrip not attached perfectly: http://u.cc.utah.edu/~gmj06b50/Guns/AK-47-SAR-1-stock-2.jpg http://u.cc.utah.edu/~gmj06b50/Guns/AK-47-SAR-1-foregrip.jpg

Overall I'm happy with it though!

I'm just anxious to get out and shoot this thing today... so I don't know how bad I want to go back and exchange it.
