3.5" blade with an OAL of 7.5" The entire knife has been beadblasted and finished with matte black Duracoat, giving it a nonglare appearance, as well as protection from corrosion and abrasion. Nice! only problem i see is that since it has no guard your hand could easily slip and get cut if you were to stab someone.

In a self-defense type situation, this knife would be better used in a reverse style (pikal) grip.

ah, and you put your thumb over the grip, i assume?
Cousin Jack

Correct. Then you would use it like an icepick. :D

This knife is made from O1 tool steel.

Yep. Pikal grip. But, 9 times out of 10, that is how I wield a knife anyway.
Very nice work. Excellent construction.

Very nice work. From the pic it looks like you've only ground an edge on one side (or maybe the Duracoat is hiding it a little). Would that be for legal issues or utility issues?

Beautiful knife!
IIRC, pikal and reverse grip are two completely separate things.

LooseGrouper, this one is not completely finished yet. The Duracoat needs to cure for another week before I can put the edge on, or make the sheath.
It is my understanding that "ice pick", "reverse", "earth" and "pikal " are all references to the same type of grip (tip down)....Daniel, maybe you could share your understanding of the pikal grip.

Pakal (icepick grip) vs. Sak-Sak (hammer grip)
Pakal is an "icepick" or blade down grip with the edge in as opposed to an edge out that allows a vicious ripping out, blocks and traps. Here's a nice video of pakal knife tapping. see #1 http://www.pekiti.com/video.php
Sak-Sak is a "hammer" or blade up grip much like western saber. #2 on the same page show sak-sak.

hso got it! I would also add that I have heard "pikal" in reference to a standard grip with the edge inward. Have you also found this to be the case hso?

I guess I still see them as the same and not completely different. Just a matter of edge in or edge out. BTW a dagger held in the pikal grip would be both edge in and edge out. :D
Nice video clip. Very reminiscent to the material/techniques Mike Inay taught when I studied Inayan Eskrima. I became a certified instructor in his system. We used the term "earth grip" to represent a reverse knife grip.

Cuz,
Yep I've heard Earth and Sky also. Kali, Escrima, Pekiti-Tirsia, they're from the same roots so while the techniques may get called something a bit different they all resemble each other.
DF,
I've been taught that edge in is Pakal and that edge out is something else, but I'm drawing a blank about the edge out name.
