I got to the local outdoor range for the first time this year yesterday intending to shoot the THR Mail-In Match with some military-type rifles.

Although the day before we hit 78 degrees, it was cold yesterday, 38 at home and colder at the range, I think. Just about the time I got to shoot the wind came up. It was blowing from the target berm to me. Brrr!

Since I had the rifle out anyway I decided to shoot my Remington 541 as any rifle on the match. Things were ugly at first and didn't settle until I'd shot about 10 shots.

I've been rusty in the spring before but this is the worst I remember. I need to go out again, as soon as we break 50 degrees and practice!

Any one else go rusty over the winter?

My skills seem to build a layer or 2 of corrosion over the winter, too.....

My slow fire skills stay pretty solid. What really hurts is getting into field positions again, rapid fire strings, and handling reloads/clearance problems. Dry firing helps a lot during the winter but some things just have to be done live fire on the line.

I stayed at it most of the winter . M1 Garand at 450 yards using 300 yard repair centers . Egad ! those things are small but it's the biggest I had . The snow made for an interesting time in January :cool: shooting through the snowflakes .
I hope to show better at the range now that good weather is here .
