While the new .454 Alaskan is neeto and all, I've noticed that there aren't any medium length Ruger Super Red Hawks.

Either you have the "snubbie" or you jump to 7.5"

I'm thinking a 4" SRH would be pretty cool ... here's a photoshopped concept.

Is this something that could be done by a gunsmith for a reasonable price?

It can be done. I believe some of the custom six-gun makers offer conversions of that sort.

Would probably be pricey, though...

Why would you want to shoot magnum rounds in a short barrel? 7.5 inch has fantastic balance, and is perfect, IMHO.

Because I want a "backwoods gun" and the 7.5" barrel is just too long to comfortably pack while hiking, climbing and otherwise doing "backwoods stuff".

The 4" revolver is about the perfect length for this application (hence the S&W "Mountain Gun").

I like this concept, though I might prefer an SRH with a 5.5" barrel (like the regular Redhawk). Your photoshopped pic looks surprisingly good. A real bruiser.

The 7.5" SRHs are also nice.

For now, I leave the 7 1/2" at home and carry a G20;)

I,too,would like a medium length Super. Magnaport has a custom package 480 with a 4.8" bbl. Looks like a nice woods gun, and I think those big .475" slugs would handle just about anything.

Hmmm, since it was designed for use with a scope, hence the mounting provisions, I don't see it happening. Why not just go with the 5 1/2" Redhawk.

I'd like to see a 5 or 6" barrell SRH with a barrel profile that matches the frame extension...

You'd have to face off the frame extension to make it flat--there's a little rounding toward the front.

It would look sort of like a giant GP100.

Something like this--my apologies for the photoshop butcher job...

And yes, you would need a lower front sight if you did it this way. Something like the GP100 front sight that doesn't have an integral base.
