Legal to separate SAR-1 Barrel/Trunnion and Receiver?

I have a ban SAR-1 that I would like to bring out of ban configuration. I was going to install the barrel/trunnion from a Polish kit I have lying around on the SAR-1, however I noticed that it looks like the SN was stamped on the trunnion of the SAR-1. Since the receiver is the “gun” why is the SN on the trunnion.

Does this mean a SAR-1 cannot ever be rebarreled?

If I was to seperate the two would I be making a "new" firearm and have to (re)serialize the receiver?

Here is a picture of how it looks I found on gunsnet.

The general rule as far as the ATF goes is that the reciever IS the gun, and everything else is just spare parts.

The serial number on the RECIEVER is therefore the gun's serial number.

Serial numbers on spare parts are just random markings of no legal significance, as far as the ATF is concerned. They're usually the result of foreign gun laws, which sometimes require matching markings.

Incidentally, look around the site, and educate yourself on the issue of parts counts and imported non sporting rifles before you get yourself into trouble.

I am familar with what parts must be serialized (receiver on a longgun, frame on a HG), however there is NO serial number on the receiver of any SAR-1 I have seen. The serial number is stamped on the trunnion.

The trunnion on a AK type rifle is changed in some cases during rebarreling due to different barrel sizes being used in different coutries rifles. Thus if a SAR-1 was rebarreled and the trunnion changed it would "lose" its SN.

Interesting thing is that the American made rcvrs are serialized and that the trunion in a parts kit is not considered a rcvr.

Which is rather securely riveted to the receiver.

My SLR-95 has the serial on the receiver.

I'd wager the BATF figures that stamped receiver AK variants seldom have their barrel trunnions removed from the receivers, so it's permissible to have that part serialized as a permanent component of the receiver.

So I'd check with the local BATF technology branch and ask about trunnion replacement. They probably would have you simply serialize the new trunnion with the rifle's old serial number once it's securely riveted in place. Otherwise, you could talk to the folks who do custom AK builds/rebuilds (Krebs, Krinks, etc) and find out what the BATF told them. ;)

I'm trying to figure out myself what you're attempting to do with the SAR-1 to bring it into "ban" configuration. I've threaded the muzzle on my SAR-1 and installed a slant brake, and adding the bayo lug is a matter of swapping out the front sight assembly, not changing the whole barrel/trunnion system. One needs access to a decent hydraulic press to properly fit barrels to trunnions, regardless.
