22luvr April 16, 2003, 02:15 PM Here we go again.....For those of you who have checked these out up-close-and-personal......I'm looking for something a little better for my Smith 340SC to carry in the pocket. I have been using an Uncle Mike's size 4 soft, flexible fabric holster. However, I find myself looking for something a little thinner and less obtrusive.
The DeSantis Nemesis looks like it could fill the bill: Inexpensive, lightweight, stays firmly in the pocket and appears to be fairly flat.
I'd really like something about the thickness of the material that plastic milk jugs is made from. Anything to make my snubby look a little thinner in the pocket. Any suggestions? I'll go with leather IF it is really-really thin and does a magic job on the snubby in the pocket.
Am I just denying reality? Can the right holster shrink the profile of a snubby?? Thanks again

Johnny Guest April 16, 2003, 02:40 PM I have the DeSantis and an Uncle Mike's No. 1. For all practical purposes, these are the same holster, just done in different materials.
Each will hold a J-frame Smith or D-frame Colt only by barrel, frame and cylinder, with trigger guard exposed in the pocket. This doesn't worry me, as the entire assembly IS totally covered in the pocket.
The UM #1 is made of something like neoprene, similar to wet suit material, with edge stiffener and a band of stiffener across the body.
The DeSantis is made of a stiffer fabric which has a textured finish, and it seems to keep its shape a little better. I haven't put my caliper on either one. It is barely possible that the DS is a tiny bit thicker, but makes up for it in being slightly more stable. While I could live with either one, if I needed to choose, I'd go for the DS, though I believe it is a bit more money--Mine came as a gift, so I can't quote the price. I think the UM is about $9.00.
As a bonus, both of these holsters hold a Kel Tec P32 beautifully--They cover the trigger guard on the little auto.
As with all holster/pistol combos, you need to practice the draw. With certain types of pocket fabrics, it is possible to draw the holster with the pistol. I handle this by thumbing down the top part and/or pressing down with my middle finger. This is more easily done than written, believe me.
These work better in a side pocket than in a hip pocket, except with the P32.
Best,
Johnny
10-Ring April 16, 2003, 03:18 PM I have the Nemesis for my Jetfire. I like how it sits in the pocket & allows for a nice smooth draw. I didn't care for the soft Uncle Mike's holters. They just seemed like they'd wear out MUCH faster.
Logistar April 16, 2003, 04:28 PM I have a Nemesis for my P32 also. Works fine.
mrat April 17, 2003, 02:10 AM Check out www.fist-inc.com. They make a pocket holster out of kydex that looks almost as thin as milk carton plastic.
I just ordered their leather version of this holster yesterday. I almost ordered the kydex holster. I really liked how thin the kydex holster looked but I was concerned about stiff or sharp the kydex material would be for pocker carry.
Kentucky Rifle April 17, 2003, 09:42 AM I have a lot of Uncle Mike's stuff. However, I'll never buy any more products from them. You see, I had a slight problem with one of their products, so I e-mailed them. I accidentally received an e-mail that was meant to be kept internal. It was INSULTING!! So ~UP THEIRS!! I'll not buy a single thing from them ever again. Besides, the DeSantis Nemesis is a better holster. I have one for my J-frames. I like it very much. RJ makes some even better than the Nemesis for just a little bit more. And RJ's are CUSTOM MADE.

concerned citizen April 17, 2003, 02:32 PM For a ultra thin pocket holster you won't do better than the fist kydex described above.
The DeSantis Nemesis is a much better pocket holster than the UM, but if anything its slightly thicker.
Check out the fist kydex, I use them exclusivly.
tbeb April 17, 2003, 04:35 PM I use a Mika pocket holster (www.frontiernet.net/~akim) for pants front pocket carry. It hides the outline of my snub .38, and it stays put when drawing. Holster plus shipping was only $14.95.
My transaction with Robert Mika is worth mentioning. He sent me holster, and told me to try it. If I like it then pay him. If I don't like it then I owe him nothing--just give holster to someone who will use it. I paid, after trying holster for 1-2 days.

Erich April 18, 2003, 10:11 AM I've owned both the DeSantis Nemesis and the UM pocket holsters, albeit for different guns. I think the stickiness of the Nemesis (which wears off, btw, and can be briefly revitalized by wetting the holster slightly - not something I really want to do) gives it a slight edge, but they cost somewhat more. So, all in all, it's a wash.
I have found that I don't like carrying small revos in soft pocket holsters, however - they print too much (from the cylinder bulge). I would recomment you look at either DeSantis' hard leather pocket holster (what I use for my j-frames) or something from Mr. Hedley. The larger area of smooth leather seems to scream "GUN!" less, at least when I'm wearing it.
ACP April 18, 2003, 05:21 PM I have both. The UM will sometimes come out of the pocket on the draw, along with the gun. The smooth lining of the Nemesis has allowed my S&W 642 to drop out of my pocket and deposit itself on my car seat or easy chair several times. Thank God this has never happened at work or at a friend's house. I used to have a Kramer horsehide for a Seecamp LWS 32. That, too, became very smooth (like glass) over time and allowed the Seecamp to fall out of my pants pocket: once at a hockey gamre, once at Sears while I was buying carpet.
I don't know what the answer is. BTW, I rate the UM and the Nemesis about equally thick (or thin). The UM will "bunch up" over time; the Nemesis has distinct corners that print while sitting.
mrat April 19, 2003, 04:06 AM concerned citizen,
I almost ordered the fist kydex but I was afraid it would be too stiff or have sharp edges to the kydex. Do you have any problems like that? I ordered their leather version a few days ago due to these concerns. I really like how thin the kydex looks.

Same here with my 36 chiefs special, but it works fine with my sp101, which is larger.
I carry a G-26 glock in a nemesis and its perfect for that gun.
I also carry the model 36 in the leather desantis which works perfectly!!!!!!
