Hello Everyone,

My quote for my custom AR-10 is being processed and I found something in the new 2006 Leupold catalog that might serve as an all around scope for engagements from CQB to long range engagements.

It is the Leupold 2.5-8x36 Mark 4 MR/T 30mm rifle scope with an illuminated Mil-Dot or TMR reticle. It is optimized for use on AR pattern rifles and seems perfect for my needs...I think.

My experience with scopes is limited, but it struck me that if the scout scopes are 2.5x that this scope on its lowest setting would be fine for CQB while offering the versatility of higher magnifications in one scope.

Am I on the mark or am I missing something?

Thanks for the input.

I think 2,5 magnification is way to much for work up to 30 meters or 100 feet or 27 yards. What I would have chosen is a magnification of 1-4, with the "1" magninfication as close to true "1" as possible. For example the Scmidt und bender short dot, the new Elcan 1 and 4 magnification. Or something Leupold, Meopta, Ior or Zeiss. All depends of how much money you have to spare.

Higher magnification at close range makes it harder to have both eyes open.
With "1" in magnification the scope "disapears" and you have only the red dot, or crosshairs to consentrate on.

2.5x won't be as fast as a red dot; but you can be plenty fast with it. I did a moving box drill on targets from 15yds in 3.71 seconds with a TA11 (3.5x). I did drop a shot outside the -0 zone when doing it though.

I've seen the Meopta Meostar R1 in use, it's awesome. Utilize the 1X, and dial up to 4X if need be. Lighted rangefinding reticle, etched onto the glass. It's worth a look!

Max power? Probably 2.5X, but 1.5X would be better. I think they have a lower powered scope in that line than the 2.5-8x.
