And how's it different from a GSR?

Other than all the problems with the gsr and im sure they wanted to change the name i don't see any difference between the 2

There are lots of models now and most don't have the rail the GSR did (does.)

You know you're not going to buy a 1911 :neener:

I wouldn't say the original GSR had any problems to begin with.

After all it was designed to mirror the nineteen eleven, right?

From what I heard it performed to expectation. (heh)

no it wasn't a mirror the ugly lock right in the slide told ya that plus just slapping parts together don't work especially from different makers

Is a shame though ya figure a Firearm thats been around almost 100 years should be easy to make a copy off but well look at kimber they haven't figured it out yet

To answer your question:

The GSR was the original nomenclature used by Sig when it introduced it's 1911. The pistol was re-worked and re-named to be the GSR Revolution after there were a number of quality control issues with the original GSR's. If you look at the Sig sight http://www.sigarms.com/Products/ShowCatalogProduct.aspx?categoryid=25 you'll see they generally refer to them as Revolution, but the nomenclature on the slide says 'GSR' on one side and "Revolution" on the other.

You probably wouldn't want to buy a non-Revolution GSR as there were a number of assembly, fit and finish problems. The new Revolution GSR's however are truly awesome shooters with maybe the best trigger action of any 1911 out there.

Perhaps, what I meant was the reviews of the GSR mirrored my experiance with the nineteen eleven -- unreliable at best. Of course there are those that sware by them; I sware at them.

I have one of the early GSR (sub-800 serial number).

While some early GSR owners had problems, SIG made them right. And mine is a fine gun, comparable in most respects to a Wilson that costs quite a bit more. I don't like the rail, but other than that, I think its a great gun. (I added a CHEAP mag well from Numrich.)

1911Tuner, from here on THR detail stripped it, examined it closely, and said nice things. Came with a nice trigger.

Nice-looking gun... do they offer one without the frame rail?

Yup. They are now available in stainless or blued, and with and without rails.

Rails make it hard to find a holster.

With the rails it should be pretty easy to make a minimalist holster if nothing is on the rail.

Nice-looking gun... do they offer one without the frame rail? mine is exactly like the one pictured by Walt Sherill but without the rail. Sig is DRAMATICALLY expanding their offerings in the GSR Revolution line. If you haven't looked recently you need to. It's an AWESOME offering.
