Just bought an unissued Yugo SKS...questions...

My father just bought an unissued Yugo SKS for $180 shipped. Such a good price he couldn't pass it up. Is there anything that we should know about these? What is the best thing to use to clean off cosmoline? What is the cheapest decent quality non-corrosive, non-steel cased, non-russian 7.62X39mm ammo out there? Wouldn't mind buying 500 or so rounds at a time for a good price.

Enjoy WN,
Brake cleaner works wonders, and be prepared to soak the blot/firing pin. Then blow it out to make sure it's moving freely. If the pin sticks, dangerous slam fire can result. Other than that, it's an easy, fun toy. Give us a range report.

WD-40 and lemon oil for the stock---to get all the crud off.
The Russian ammo is waaaaaay too cheap not to use---Winchester White box from Wally's is 4x as expensive-----just get the Russian stuff---shoot the heck out of it and then clean well.
Cleaning is easy to do----the SKS field strips with no tools and you can get to all the vital areas.
Have fun with the new toy.
Also--WD-40 will free up that firing pin quite easily----just make sure that pin shakes freely before you go shooting.

Shoot Russian steel cased ammo and clean well. The only disadvantage of the Yugos is the fact that their bore is not chrome plated for protection against corrosive salts.

I just got one of these also and I really like it. Mine didn't have much cosmo on the stock so I bet yours is the same if it is new unissued also. The grease that came on mine was not very heat sensitive. Often the grease a surplus gun comes coated in will turn runny when heated but not the stuff on my Yugo SKS, I boiled my bolt in a pot of soapy water for 30 minuits and the grease didn't come off! I agree with some of the other guys here, get yourself a couple cans of break cleaner and WD-40. I use these two types of cleaners on most of my guns now, sometimes if you want a quick clean and lube, you use the break clearner and then spray the WD-40 after, 30 second gun cleaning!
I shoot Russian Wolff ammo in my SKS and my AK, I have never had a ammo related problem. I think Russian designed guns can shoot Russian ammo just fine. I bought 1000 rounds of 7.62x39mm for $72 OTD at the last gunshow.
