I am looking to get a practical sidearm I can carry when I go camping and gold panning with some friends of mine. I want a revolver since it is better in the field in my opinion. Less parts, easier to clean or dry if it gets wet, etc. I am considering the .357 or .45 colt Ruger Bird's Head Vaquero

or the Charles Daly 1873 .357 or .45 Colt

I like the action on the Ruger a little better. The CD has a more colt like action and it is just not as stiff as the ruger action. The CD is however about $100 cheaper and very similar in style. Anyone have suggestions. I would also listen to other options. This would be mainly for self defense against two legged varmits but may be needed against four legged ones also and needs to be simple and user friendly.

In your thread entitled "Guns/Bears/Conspiracy theories" you mention that you already have a Ruger Alaskan in .454 on order. I would think that would do it. If the four legged varmints you are worried about are bears, I would probably go with bear repellent spray. I have a hard enough time shooting bulls-eyes on stationary targets with heavy calibers. I doubt that an angry bear is going to stand still and let me shoot him/her in the head. If I had to go with a bear defense gun it would be a 12 gauge shotgun.

I wish Wild Alaska was still around. Maybe spacemanspiff will stop by.

The Alaskan is more of a novelty and I am not sure I will even get it before summer since Ruger is so slow to ship them. This piece would be for more frequent use.

By all means go with Ruger. They have the best products and no doubt the best Customer Service. Been shooting Rugers for 40 years!
