I have a new Rem 58 with 5 1/2" barrel. I realize that with this short barrel the cylinder pin can't be removed, but does that also mean that I can't remove the loading lever and plunger?

I read the recommended post. What I'm still unclear about is, if the cylinder pin can't be removed does that mean that the loading lever and rammer can't be removed also?

The rammer does not hold the cylinder pin in place. Just remove the screw and the rammer will slide out without any problem.

I'll have to try again, for some reason (most likely operator error) after removing the screw the lever and rammer don't slide out.

Actually, you do gotta remove the loading lever and rammer to remove the cylinder pin. It is round where it enters the recoil shield, flat bottomed the rest of the way to the T on the front end of it. The loading lever does keep it from going anywhere when latched, and the loading lever also keeps it from falling out when you change cylinders.

It does not, however, have any mechanical interference to prevent the rammer and loading lever from coming out when you remove just 1 screw.

If you are taking that 1 screw out, it should slide right out. I have one pistol that the rammer is tight in its bore, but still comes out easily enough.

Might I suggest you leave the cylinder in place for a try and remove the screw, put about a 1/16 drill bit in the hole, place the rammer between chambers and press on the loading lever to see if it is just tight in the bore?

It should move a smidgeon. If that is the case, drive it back to where you can get the screw back in, put it back in the box, and send or take it back to where you bought it from. As Old Dragoon mentioned, the front of the frame may have been pinched sometime during or after assembly. Still free fit beyond the pinch, operates, but not right. The screw comes out, those parts will fall out.
