Does anyone know, if using only Triple 7 powder in a percussion revolver, can you clean the gun like a conventional revolver (ie. with Hoppes #9 and a petroleum based lube), instead of the usual water clean-up with a non-petroleum based lube?

Thanks for any info.

777 is mildly corrosive, even though it is advertised as non-corrosive. You still need to get rid of the corrosive salts when cleaning. You could give everything a quick spray down with windex (the ammonia will neutralize the salts) and then wipe off and clean as any other gun.

The last bottle of 777 I got did not have non corrosive on it, I think they dropped that. I do clean mine with water.

that's why i like 777 so much. i just run it in water and brush the bore and the cylinders. i'm practically done in 15 minutes.

The only reason I was considering using something like Hoppe's #9 instead of the typical water clean-up is that with water I have to make sure to get all the water out of every crack and crevice. With Hoppe's #9 (or equivelant) if I miss a little, no harm done. When only doing a partial stripping of the revolver for cleaning (remove cylinder, nipples, loading lever and ram) (leaving the internal workings untouched) I'm always afraid that a drop of water will end up in the internal workings and cause rust.

Thanks

Try this, it might work well for you. It's the cleaning method I use for quick cleaning when I've only shot 12 to 24 shots.

Take out the cylinder, cylinder pin, and rammer.
Spray them all down with windex or some other cheap ammonia based window cleaner.
Brush everything off with an old toothbrush, (not your wife's ;) ) rinse with another spray of windex and wipe down with an old towel (again, not your wife's bathroom towel)
Spray these down with WD-40 and wipe dry.
Use the same process for the hammer, barrel, frame, and cylinder pin and rammer holes in the frame.
Lube the parts back up with whatever lube you are using and reassemble.

The whole process takes me about 15 minutes.
