It's to tie a string through, in case you ever have to pull a tooth.

Years ago I read of guys tying a string to cock the pistol during dry-firing sessions. You loop the string around the back of your neck and hold it with your weak hand. Snap and pull the string and you are ready to snap again. It works great for one hand target practice.

It lowers the mass of the hammer increasing lock-time. For us mere mortals the added benfits are not really noticeable, but in competition (where a thousandth can make or break you) I am sure that the top shooters could appreciate it...
