I bought a replacement stock for my savage 99c rifle form Gunstocks Inc. and had major problems from the start, not only with the fit, but the company. the stock description stated I needed to fit the stock to the reciever, but I dodn't know how rough it was going to come and how much I would have to sand to even get the stock to go onto the reciever. Well I am going to scrub the stock and forend I bought from Gunstocks Inc (75 bux down the drain) because I don't have the skill to fit the stock to the reciever or the forend to the barrel and because I messed up the forend and the stock was cracked when I got it from Gunstocks Inc. Does anywhere make a savage 99 replacement stock that "drops In"? I am not very skilled at wood working, so I am looking for a stock that only need really minor, almost stupid easy inlet, or no inletting at all. Gunstocks Inc. is out of the question, so I am looking at Boyds, Cabela', or Brownells. All state there is minor inlet that needs to be done, but how much? Like I stated above, I am a novice wood worker at best, so which company makes the best (least amount of inlet) stock? I can do the cosmetic wood work such as sanding outside, filling the grain and clear coating the stock, it is just the inlet. Is there a place I can get a prefit stock with no inlet? All ideas and info will be a great help. If you have been down the "replace a savage 99 stock" road before, please tell me what you did. Thanks!!!

I've replaced almost half a dozen Savage 99 stocks. You have three reasonable choices - auctions (eBay, AuctionArms) Numrich, and Boyds. Of these three, I've not used Boyds for my Savages but have for other rifles and have been generally pleased. The auction sites are a really good source *if* you're not in a hurry and are willing for just the right one to come along. Numrich only has late-model "C" stocks in MonteCarlo configuration, but they're quite nice for the price if you're willing to sand the stock's receiver 'ears' down to fit a pre'C' receiver. (The C model has a taller receiver and therefore the stock is taller to match.)

If anyone else (Brownells, etc.) is selling a Savage 99 stock, chances are that it's either from Boyds or Gunstocks, Inc.

I contacted Cabelas about their stocks and asked if they were made by cabelas or an outside vender. The rep told me that "Wood Plus" makes the stocks for them. I asked if they are "drop in" style with no fitting to the gun and he told me that most are, but a couple dp have to be fitted He said mine should drop in. Have any of you bought a cabelas stok before? Are they drop in or a pain? Thanks!!!
