"Hate" Threads

I hope I won't get kicked off of this forum for saying this, but are we getting a little P.C. about using the word, "hate"? For many of us it's just a colloquialism, or a very casual use of language, if you will. I'm sorry that this response is not better informed. My work doesn't allow me to spend the time that I used to on your forum and its predecessor. Yours is flat out my favorite site. But, am I just lost on this one? "I hate it when people show up for work late." "I hate it when you wear . . .." " I hate DeLorean cars . . . " Would I be censored for couching my language in such a way? Since I have little time, regrettably, to visit here, and will have less with my new job, please correct me if I didn't understand the closed thread. There was no background info to go by, but am I clueless? The word "hate" has a far different and very casual meaning applied to a product vs. a person. Please set me straight on this one if I've veered from the intent of the original thread. Thank you.

I'll let the moderators give you the details but for awhile there, "hate" threads were popping up everywhere. I think this forum is unique in its ...
maturity (for lack of a better word) and the respect that members have for each other. I frequent some other forums (motorcycles, in particular) where that isn't the case. The I hate Glock strings, I hate Beretta strings, etc. started making this forum sound like the playground chatter and posturings at a junior high school. I'm glad they put a stop to it. It was getting out of hand and reflected poorly on us all.

Words mean things. They should be used properly.

I'm with you DeadCalm. It is a little sad that we have to censor the threads because some of us get too upset if someone else says they hate something. I think, as long as the hate is confined to objects like guns, what is the problem? If we started saying that I hate everyone that has a Glock, that would be another story.
I like to hate some things, it is fun. That is where the term "love to hate" comes from. There are some comercials on T.V. that I hate so much, I actually start to like them.:scrutiny: Is that weird? I think there are a lot of other people like me in fact. I can talk about hating something and not really get upset about it. I can here other people talk about things they hate and it doesn't make me want and go report them to a Mod.
I guess the problem here is, we have some people that just need to grow up and not let things bother them so much. These are the same people that tell everyone else that they need to grow up. In fact, it is them that need to mature since being an adult means having to deal with things that may offend or upset you. The solution is not to hide from these things but try and learn how to deal with them so they don't ruin your day. I am not picking on anyone, I just think we have a bunch of cry babies and old women on this site for some reason. I have seen full grown men get all upset because someone else said something they didn't agree with. If you can't take a difference of opinion on the internet, you probably can't really hack it in the real world. I suspect that a lot of these people don't live in the real world anyway, that is why they are so unprepaired to deal with anything. I bet alot of these people live in a world that is filled with only people like them, people that think just like they do. They feel secure in that world because nobody ever dissagrees with them.

There are two usual meanings of the word "hate."
One is a "light" meaning, just meaning dislike, but couched in a manner so as to arouse discussion. "I hate American Idol."
One is a "hard" meaning, bringing in connotations of a willingness to destroy all examples, often people or groups thereof. "I hate (fill in particular ethnic group)."
While the first meaning may have been the one used in the threads in question, just ask yourself this: what do those threads accomplish? So you don't like Glocks/1911s/Jennings... so what? There are those who do (well, maybe not the Jennings :D ), and they probably feel as strongly, if not more so, in the opposite direction. They tend to just devolve into flamewars harping on the worst points of the gun family in question.
We see enough of that in other threads, no need to kick off entire threads dedicated to such things. I love my 1911, and if the S ever does HTF, I'll have the backs of my fellow high roaders, even if they are packing Glocks.

I think the moderators move on the hate threads was a good one and I think that it had more to do with the needless negativity that stifles an intelligent conversation. Having said that...I also agree that many people are looking for a reason to be offended and it doesnt take long to find a reason.
Tech made a good point.....and I would add that if and when we bomb Iran we will all need to watch each others backs very closely.
(Dang I said "bomb" and "Iran" in the same sentence on the internet! I better clean up the house so that the Homeland Security guys have a place to sit when they come to see me...
