I have a Norinco Chinese AK-47 that I am considering letting go. It has been used but not abused. I am not looking for an exact value, but some kind of range. I would think at least $300, but I had a guy tell me it was worth much more than that. I am not out to make a fortune, I just want to unload it quickly, and at a fair price. Can anyone out there give me some sort of range of asking price?

What kind is it? If it is a post ban type Mak-90, it won't be worth as much as a Pre-ban config. Need more info and pics if possible. Look up Chinese AKs on Gunbroker and see if you can find one similar to your and watch it and see what it sells for. Don't pay too much attention to asking price, people can ask whatever they want, it doesn't mean they are going to sell. My guess is, it is probably worth at least $300 as Chinese AKs are more valuable then say Rom SARs or WSARs and they are at least $300.

It is pre-ban. Does this make that much of a difference? I will try to get some photos up this weekend when I have time.

Depending on where you are you should be able to get $400-$500 for it easily. I paid $400 for a Mak-90 sporter, which was probably a little high, but I really wanted it and it was in very nice shape.

If it is a pre '89 import ban AK, then depending on how fast you want to sell it, you could get upwards of $550-$750 if you aren't in a big hurry to sell it.

While in relative terms, these should not be as sought after as they were during the AWB, there are still a lot of people that will pay a premium for these weapons.

If it is a post ban(no threaded muzzle, thumbhole stock, '90-'94 importation), then $350-$400 is about right depending on your location.

Not around here!

Gun shows sell pre-ban Chinese AK's for around $1,100. That's new though. For post-ban MAK-90 stuff, you're talking around $$575ish IF you can find a new one. There's almost no new ones left. Used ones are just $50 less if you look around.

A milled receiver pre-ban chinese AK might be up in the 600-1000 dollar range if it is in good condition. Some of the chinese guns were really high quality.

I never did understand why the pre-ban rifles were still worth all that extra $$$. Since any rifle can now be altered to previously banned configurations.

Why should year of manufacture/importation make it worth that much more?

The chinese guns are effected by a different import ban. It is still against the law to change an MAK-90 to a preban configuration. You can however add a certain number of American parts to the MAK-90 making it legal to change to a pistol grip and other preban features.

Yeah, I get the whole thing about number of American parts. That's not unique to the Chinese firearms. I was just speaking in general of the '94 AWB and how "pre-ban" doesn't really exist anymore since the restrictions no longer apply.

I suppose it's a semantics thing. Which ban is one referring to when one says "pre-ban?" I guess I always considered the phrase to be used exclusively with the '94 AWB. Any other ban usually referenced the year or legislative, i.e., GCA of '68, import ban ('89, the one referred to when discussing how many foreign and domestic parts a gun is allowed to have), etc.

My original post referred to the '94 AWB. I don't get how a rifle that originally came with 3+ evil features is still worth more than one that didn't, but now can have them.

Yeah I hate it when people bad mouth for sale threads but I was really tempted by a "Pre-ban" Oly Arms AR pistol for sale here on THR.

Get this asking price was $1800. :barf: Ban is expired and they were still selling these during the ban anyway. The go for around $700 - 800. :what:

The last post in that thread says "Caution" and gives a link to ar15 forum. I can't access that from work so I'm not real sure if that was a price warning or a warning about the seller. But someone ought to kick him in the head for trying to get an extra $1000 out of it.

A local gunshop left me a message tonight saying they had a Norinco AK for $1000. Not sure if was pre or post ban, but the other stuff they quoted for me were more than a bit high in price.

"Pre-ban" is still a viable and valuable description, because it did not expire for all US citizens. Since 1994, many states and local jurisdictions implemented their own version of the 1994 AWB with virtually the same wording, but with the expiration date deleted. The state of California is the biggest example. Your "Pre-Ban" weapons are still valuable there... because they are still the only weapons allowed to have detachable magazines, standard capacity magazines, flash hiders, pistol grips, etc.

And to retnav05, you don't have to read the thread if you don't click your mouse on it. That simple.
