I'm not sure, but did you have to pay a hazmat fee for shipping ammo? That might be something to check.

Shipping is another way some companies make a profit.

I once ordered a pack of .22 rimfire snap caps from Traditions, which were I think $5/pack. I had to pay an additional $4.99 for the shipping. When I got them, the package had been shipped bulk mail and the bill of sale inside listed the shipping charges at 89 cents. There was no refund or credit for the balance listed on the receipt. They just pocketed the rest.

The increased fuel costs have led to higher shipping rates for everything. it's an unfortunate fact of life right now.

The increased fuel costs have led to higher shipping rates for everything. So they paid the Post Office 89 cents to ship my package and charged me $4.99 for it because... I'm supposed to pay for their gas so they could drive to work that day?

I've found natchez shipping rates to be pretty fair to me, ammo is heavy. Ymmv.

But yes there is alot of markup in shipping. Buds guns shop has some great prices, but you have to remember their shipping will run another $25 on top of it. Theres a holster maker that does the same and charges about double of what priority mail costs. Probably the last time I'll order from them.

im pretty sure that $30 bucks woulda covered a brick of 22's and couple boxes of 44 mag and 9mm. you know, i realize that shipping is another way to make money but i think thats a pretty underhanded way to make an extra buck.

I also find natchez shipping rates reasonable. I find that I just need to make sure it is a good deal still after shipping, before I actually order the product. With ammo it is usually still a good deal as long as I am ordering about 500 rounds at a time. YMMV :)

i think thats a pretty underhanded way to make an extra buck.Yep, I consider it stealing in some cases.

If someone takes an item and doesn't pay for it, that's stealing.

But when a company tells you shipping an item will cost a certain amount of money and then they only pay a fraction of that amount to ship your item,
isn't that lying and stealing?

If I know what the total bill is before I place the order, then how exactly was I deceived when I got what I ordered and I was charged the amount they said I was going to be charged?

If a business wants to put some of their overhead and/or profit in shipping, big deal. If it's not there, it's going to be in the item price. Either way, as long I got what I ordered at the price I agreed to, I can't see how I was harmed.

I comparison shop using the delivered price (including taxes, hasmat fees, shipping, handling). If I'm happy with the total price, I don't care if they listed the item for a penny and charged me $80 for handling.

I bought a freight scale just to police the online ammo dealers. If you charge me for 26lbs then it damn sure better weigh 26lbs when it gets here.

On several occasions I have gotten money back from retailers when I called them.

It all comes out in the wash.

From a marketing standpoint, it is just one of two ways to do things. Advertise a low price, and then charge everything shipping actually costs, including labor and shipping materials (and for som, yet more that ends up as profit)... or wrap it all up and say, $$ much, shipped to your door.

It appeals to two different mindsets. As long as you knew what it would be, no harm no foul.

Shipping costs, in general, are getting higher. Just a few weeks ago, I sent a 4"x6"x8" box that weighed 4.5 pounds from South Carolina to Florida. I sent it from a main UPS hub and had it go regular "Ground". They charged me $11 to ship it. Two other outrageous shipping prices? How about $34 to ship a motorcycle windshield from SC to Wyoming? They charged me an extra $7 for gas because he lived out in the "boonies". Also, I used to be able to send 15-20 lbs packages all the way to California, 4-6 years ago for $15-$17. Now, the same package size and weight, to the same place, costs $45, and everything I send is strictly sent from UPS and FedEx main hubs.

WayneConrad and pangris,
I see your point, it makes sense. It just seemed deceptive when I saw the receipt.

That's why buying ammo from Walmart works best for me. Its cheaper.

There's a bullet-maker that advertises "Free Shipping!"; well, we know it's not "free", it's just included in the price. They'll ship a thousand bullets to Maine for, say, $50. If I drive to their door and pick up the thousand bullets off their loading dock, the price is the same...$50. That tells me that a big part of their profit comes from their hidden (included) shipping charge.

I do not do business with this company.

Darth Ruger, It's easy to be taken by surprise, ain't it? I will admit that I prefer shipping to be not too terribly inflated. It makes price comparisons harder.

I like Natchez. They have great customer service and I do find their shipping to be very reasonable when bought in bulk. As other's have siad, ammo shipments are pretty heavy.

remeber, it is called not shipping, but shipping and handleing. So technicly they aren't lying to you because that price isn't just hte cost of mailing it, it is the cost of "handleing" it.

This is why sometimes buying a great deal online isn't such a great deal when the other fees come. Was going to buy a gun online and by the time I paid for shipping and transfer I could have gone to the overpriced gun shop in town and bought one brand spanking new in the box for about 15 bucks more, and gotten it faster with more security that someone wouldn't screw me over.

Well if you think its too much call them and ask them to double check. My most recent order was a speed loader, a small uncle mikes, 2 boxes of silvertips, 2 boxes of 10mm blazer, 4 boxes of 9mm blazer and it was $12 shipped to illinois. Seems about right to me.
