Just had Shotgun 101 live W/ Dave McCracken

March 17, 2006, 03:44 PM
Hi all,

I jsut got home form having a 2 hour Shotgun 101 Live with Dave McCracken. If you have the chance and can work out the time with Dave I HIGHLY recomend it.

We started off just talking for a few minutes and I gave him a briefe accounting of my very limited experience with guns then we headed out to one of the stations. On our way he had me recite the 4 rules and make sure I knew how to be safe.

I had 3 boxes of ammo with me. His response?..."You only have 3 boxes?" Next he explained how to position my body and stance and mount the gun. I practiced with the empty shotgun a couple times and then we put on our ears and eyes and went to the firing line.

I went through a box of ammo shooting at wobble while Dave gave me pointers after every shot. I probably hit about 10 or 15 of the 25.

WE went through another box where he had me try 5 at each station so i cold see how the angles changed.

THen We had a couple of guys show up and they joined. I stood off to the side while Dave shot a round with them. One fo the Guys is a THR Member IDriveB5. Then I took a round with them and shot my last box of ammo. Then Dave offered to let me shoot #6 one of his 12 guages. I did another round with #6 and it was alot of fun.

I hit about 60 of the 100 which is much better than the first time i shot. I realy enjoyed today and plan on doing more clays shooting in the future.

Did you use an 870?

What part of "Dave McCracken" did you not understand? ;) :)

"#6" is how Dave refers to one of his 870s.

Some of us are even good enough to know what #8 is gonna be and not even Dave knows - or when - or... :D

Just double-checking. ;)

Aw, shucks, gosh, gee.....

Medgrl, you're very welcome. I had a good time passing on info and acquiring good Karma.

Good to see you again, IDriveB5, and to see the progress you are making. I noted a lot of molecular separation going on when you shot your modified Express. And, you've proven again fit matters more than size, at least with stocks.

Steve, will you kindly send me your address? I have a dozen learning aids ready to send you.

#8!!?? Oi Vay is mer....

Lee,ain't it?

Chipper, Medgrl used her 870 YE 20 gauge first, then my Number 6, a 1955 model upgraded 12 gauge field gun. She used Gun Club 7/8 oz 8s in hers and a box of my ultralight 7/8 oz of 7.5s in mine. She handled the moderate recoil well.

TR, thanks. DO remember I like other shotguns too.

David, I'll be there next Friday morn, if you can get up here. Not the week after.

Of this I have no doubt.

Just curious... what kind of shotguns are #'s 1 through 5? ;)

Dave, thanks for the compliments, i was disappointed that i missed a lot of easy shots yesterday, but i guess thats what happens when youre an enginerding student.

my buddy wanted to thank you again for letting him use #6. before this outting he was kind of wish-washy about guns in general, but seeing the smile on his face, id have to say he'll be back.

Aw, Larry, she's so CUTE!!!

So's the little girl,heh,heh....

TR,there's 7 shotguns total here so far. One is Son's little NEF single, which he has outgrown. All else are 870s.

1 is the one that Pop gave me for Xmas, 1959.It's been worked over into a practical/tactical tool. It's kept ready JIC.

2 is a former cruiser gun upgraded with a Remchoked barrel, peep sight. mag extension etc. A venison acquisition tool, it doubles as backup to 1.

3 is Frankenstein, currently wearing a 26" LC barrel with a FO sight and a raffish air.

4 is the 20 gauge YE I got for the kids. Two barrels, one IC and with open sights.

5 is the TB trap death ray.

And 6 is the 1955 model I use with a 30" LC, Remchoked barrel for Wobble, Chinese, and some hunting these days.

The 12 gauge 870s can be seen in an old thread I started called "Some Pics"..

Dan, neither of us is getting enough shooting in. Work keeps interrupting my shooting plans,

Tell your buddy I'm glad I could help.

Med Girl,

You did well to take the time to have Dave help you. I am sure he even invited you back for more. He has done the same for myself and many others. Unfortunatley I do not get as many chances as I would like to "practice".

I hope to meet up again one of these Fridays. Yesterday I was taking my #2 daughter to have 4 teeth pulled. She needed tending to after that, but is up and running today (I'd be laid-up all weekend!).

At some point there will be a Dave McC Shotgun 101 Class Reunion and we'll take over the whole club for a day!!

Dan, it'll be good to see you.I should be there this coming Friday and MOST thereafter.

I won't be able to come on the 31st, and for a couple weeks after. The 31st I've some medical stuff scheduled, and after that WW and I are off on our first no kids along vacation since our Honeymoon. That was 1977.

Shotgun 101 Reunion? Oi vay....
