Gear cleanup

While knocking off a couple hundred rounds on my L-N-L I began hearing ticking sounds as the primer seated that sounded like the primer shuttle--not possible. Evenually found my Hornady seating and crimp die internals were falling back into place. The die is a bit grungy and the innards sticking.

Overall the whole thing needs a good cleaning. Last time I took the whole thing apart and sprayed it all down with one of the degreasers or brake cleaner. Can't remember which right now.

Whatever I used left a film and I had to clean THAT off. Don't want films in the powder drop, primer mechanism, etc.

So I would like to get suggestions from your experiences on how to best clean the progressive press down to the last pin or piece and what to use for lube where it is appropriate.

Alcohol or electrical contact cleaner. Both work well and NO residue. For lube I use what the manufacturer recommends.

I usually use brake cleaner, as it doesn't leave any residue. Alcahol of course works, acetone is good too.

You probably used Carb Cleaner, this has lubricants in it for the carburator linkage. Use the Electrical Contact or Brake Cleaner as these don't leave any residue or film behind.

As the Star company and C-H Auto Champ presses reconditioning centers I use an automotive oil drain pan and placed a half inch of unleaded gasoline in it and disassembled everything down to the last pin and scrubbed everything in the gas with an automotive parts cleaning stiff brush. Then if anything needed it I wiuld place a fine steel wire brush in my bench grinder and buff the offending part til it looked like new. Then lubricated and reassembled with any needed new parts.

I had a small fan placed by me to not breathe gas fumes and used rubber gloves.
