I took the 1903A3 that had been sitting in my safe for many years out to the range today along with some reloads from 1979...

Conditions= mostly cloudy, occasionally rain and a variable wind (held the 3'x5' American flag outstretched) quartering from about 7:00. Front rest only seated at bench.

I started at 25 yards to make sure I was on the paper. I put the front sight post under the 3" bull and fired 3 shots. One enlarged bullet diameter hole right at the point of aim.

So I scooted down the line and found a clean bull at the 50 yard line that another member had left. I put the post at the bottom of the 3" bull and squeezed off three more. All hit dead center 9/16" c-c group.

The next cease fire I put out a couple of NRA 100 yard rifle targets. I haven't touched the sights. The first 5 shot group is 1-1/4" in at 6:00 in the 9-10 ring. The next is in the same spot but enlarges to 1-3/4".

I must say I was very pleased.

Details
Remington 41916XX with a 2 groove (I'm pretty sure) 1944 Remington Barrel. Scant stock. Original sights set on lowest setting.
Once fired GI cases mixed, untrimmed. 173g FMJBT FA Match M72 (.308) bullet. 56.5 gr of WWII 4831. Primers unknown. Loaded November 6, 1979

The man who introduced me to shooting and reloading gave me this 1903A3 Before he died. He was a Springfield enthusiast and made sure we (those of us lucky enough to call him "Pappy") all had one. My gratitude for his guidance and encouragement is beyond repayment. Thanks Mac, you are missed.

Nice report and great story. I guess one of these days you'll have to find a worthy person to pass on that 03A3.

I'm sure that would please Mac. I have a few nephews that I hope will develop and interest.
