I saw a Winchester 70XTR, 22-250 w/Tesco 3-9X40 Serial #G1413637. The asking price is $545.00. I'd like to play at long range shooting. Is my money safe at this price for this rifle????

I'd say a better price would be $350-375. I'd spend my money on a different rifle, even at that price.

You could get a Savage 10FP and a Bushnell 3200 10x mil dot for about that price I think. That'd be much better for long range shooting IMO.

Stay away from those cheap scopes as well. The bushnell I mentioned can be found for a little over $200, but that is the minimum price for a good scope. The Savage will have the free floated barrel and all the other features that are much better suited to long range shooting than the thin barreled hunting rifles are. I will be the first to admit the savage is a pretty good deal even though I am a Remington snob myself. Don't cheap out on anything. Through a complicated process of settling for mediocraty and then dissapointment, cheap = expensive. There are a lot of good websites to look up what people consider good optics for long range shooting. Hell, even at the top of this forum is a link titled "optics for practical long range rifle shooting". Check it out.

for a little bit more you could fine a nice Rem 700 heavy barrel. I have on that i use for my local SWAT work. I bought it for $600 changed out the stoc k ( I hate wood stocks) and have a great sub MOA rifle.

That depends upon your definition of long range shooting. For me, it's 800-1,000 yards, and the .22-250 just doesn't make it. Also, I agree with only1asterisk, $350-$375 would be more like it's value.

22 250 is maxed out at 500 yds, if that is ok with you. would take a savage 11 or 12 series package rifle with 24 or 26 in bbl. over that one.
