A good friend is heading to Afghanistan. And he has left me his S&W Model 63 to use because he says "I need a proper pistol to use for trapping". He also wants me to keep it just in case the worst happens while he is over there. Use it I will but the best day I will have with it will be the day I return it to him!
I don't know much about this pistol other than it using .22 Long Rifle bullets and that its stainless. I want to completely clean this pistol inside and out but am not sure what is the best way to do it. I need your suggestions and help on cleaning.

No need to clean inside the gun as you will only mess it up. Just clean the outside and the bore and chambers. That is all a revolver needs anyway. Get a cleaning kit if you don't already have one and it should be pretty clear what you need to clean when it needs cleaning.

Agreed, no need to take the sideplate off or anything else drastic; just good bristle brushing in the bore and cylinder to keep lead and assorted gunk from building up. And of course I always want to put a T-grip on everything, but that's just me.

The 22 bore is pretty small so be sure you don't grind the rifling at the muzzle crown with the cleaning rod.

I once had a 22 diamondback where someone had done that. Viz., they wore down the rifling at the muzzle crown. They did it by not paying attention while they were cleaning the barrel. More guns are destroyed from harsh cleaning tactics than anything.

As was stated, you don't need to disassemble the gun for any reason.

Being as how it's stainless, though, it's going to get pretty black around the cylinder, breech and muzzle.

When your friend returns, you might want to clean the gun with something called Flitz. It's a really effective abrasive that you use very infrequently. Used every day, such as on the cylinder face, it could damage the gun.

But used one time to celebrate your friend's homecoming is fine.

the m-63 is one revolver the S & W sure screwed up on when they stopped making it. I have several thousand rounds throught mine. it is not for sale at anytime
